I remember when vapes first came in and to “protect the children” and “help people quit”, they hid cigarettes behind roller shutters and changed the packaging so all packets looked the same.
Where did they put the vape? Front and centre on the desk in shiny coloured packaging and now on the end caps of aisles, where they are easily accessible to young and old alike.
Like what the fuck did they expect to happen?
It seems clear to me that the old tobacco companies tactics are still in effect to promote their insidious addiction upon the public. They’ve just gotten even better at twisting it to seem for our benefit.
*comment edited to better reflect that it isn’t large tobacco companies anymore
The amount of children I see smoking these is absolutly an issue.
The amount of plastic waste from these I see just discarded on streets and in the enviroment is also a huge issue.
Also lets start referring to them as vapists, that will cut the numbers soon enough
I vape now instead of smoking. I have to say this situation is sort of ironic. The Government/media have spent almost 25 years demonising smoking which has resulted in things like these vapes existing. Now a smoking alternative exists the exact opposite of what they wanted to happen has happened. All the younger people are rushing towards these whereas they would never smoke.
Time to ban batteries, nichrome wire, and cotton wool. Wouldn’t want kids building their own diy vapes
3m budget means nothing. That’s a couple of managers and a few low level employees and 2m on set up costs.
I think the biggest issue here is ‘disposable’ vapes. They should move to ban these immediately. It’ll be harder for dodgy shops to stock and sell full kits and liquids illegally to kids, and these are such a huge environmental plague.
This only solves half the problem.Quite a lot of vapes used by kids aren’t purchased at all so test purchases are only going to do so much. They nick em easily off the shop floor from supermarkets that have full displays of them. Pick up several vapes > take them out of the security stickered boxes > slip into pocket and leave. If you have enough mates, you can all go in at once and the secruity guard can only follow one at once. It’s so easy. If vapes are only sold behind glass like cigerettes, it’s much harder to get hold of them due to ID checks and needing to actually have money but if supermarkets are allowed to keep having open accesable displays-it’s a small patch.
The vast majority of specialist vape shops already have a sensible approach – we’ve fitted buzzer to the door so we can restrict entry and we operate a challenge 25 policy.
The problem is we are up against dodgy corner shops, with their under-the-counter supplies of over capacity illegal vapes and penchant for turning a blind eye to the age of the customer….
As always, Brit gov responds years too late. Vaping peaked in 2021 and the dumb fad has been going downhill since (see share prices of top manufacturers).
Edit 2: Just asked my mum about the source and she said she tried to scare me and my sister into not using vapes… I wouldn’t do it anyway but wow.
You know that advertising campaign saying that cigarette butts are incredibly polluting? I’m sure I see more smashed, disposable vapes and empty cartridges on the streets these days than cigarette butts.
A more cynical person might wonder about the sudden focus on cigarette butts, now smoking is less popular than it has been at any time in the last hundred years.
Shops are putting these out in regular stands, not protected behind shutters. The ammount of theft of these things is astronomical.
I went for a walk on the Thames foreshore yesterday and picked up a whole bag’s worth of disposable vapes. These things need to be recycled, they are e waste and I think have lithium batteries. The bottom of a river is no place for this kind of thing, truly disgusting.
They should put a hefty deposit return on something so pollutive. Ideally they should not be allowed to produce such things in the first place.
Sounds good hopefully less vape shite all over the place
Can they just ban the disposable ones already? Big chunk of plastic to discard son the ground.
It’s the manufacturers that need to be held accountable. Legislation is needed so they can only be marketed as medical devices, if at all. Neither should they be visible in shops; keep them behind a shutter along with the cigarettes.
It should be legal for everyone, there are only benefits and no cons
Pandora’s box is open. They’re here to stay and kids won’t stop wanting to use them. It’s that simple.
As long as they don’t use it as an excuse to tax the shit out of them i don’t give a fuck, its already hard enough to buy them online now you have to pass some serious age identification checks and verification processes as a first time customer including ID, electoral register or credit report etc.
Besides its not generally the traditional “vaping” that children take up its those Juul pods and disposables which are just awful in terms of nicotine content and plastic waste, i buy big 250ml/500ml and mix them for instance.
Edit: You are also never going to stop it either how many kids did you know smoked at school? Most parent’s didn’t care and in fact i knew some that would buy cigs for them to either sell or smoke themselves, we even had dedicated areas we would go that the teachers knew about but what you gonna do.
Any single use vapes should be banned and the laws on nicotine in bottles over 10ml need reversing A-fucking-Sap. The government did the absolute worst thing for vaping by making those rules and creating these products that are used for 2 days tops then launched on the floor. Totally pointless.
I’m an adult, and I vape. But I really think we should 100% ban disposables. Firstly the amount of E-waste is disgusting, and it’ll make the entry to vaping a bit more difficult.
Why waste money on policing when they could just make them adhere to similar rules at fags. No colours, no branding and hidden?
Let kids have fun. Bad enough they can’t smoke a normal cigarette anymore. You’re gonna die anyway least look cool while you’re doing it
Just ban the disposable ewaste ones would probably be a decent start. That way adults can still vape, they cost more to throw on the ground rather than refill them so generally reduces the littering problem.

A bit too late to introduce this.
