They got the best result ever for our team and still get called a failure…
Jeezs wat a title..
It’s true. Belgium doesn’t have a winners mentality. We aim for ”good enough” and ”you did your best”. Every Olympic Games when it comes to the attention of the media that we win far fewer medals per capita than The Netherlands, the reply is always ”yes but look how many Olympic diplomas we have”. How many Belgian athletes have I heard say ”we go for a top 10 place”.
When the Netherlands lost the World Cup final to Spain it was seen as a failure. Belgium becomes third and they get a public celebration on the Grand Place. It’s a different mentality. Dutch athletes go for gold, even if the odds are ever so slim. This gives them a psychological advantage.
To me the World Cup in 2018 was also a failure. Because we absolutely had the talent and possibility to win the title. But this team was carried by talent and not by brilliant coaching. I blame Martinez for 2018 and I blame the KBVB for letting Martinez stay on as coach leading to the failures of the EC in 2020 (quarter final?!) and WC 2022 (exit group phase).
The hard verdict is that with the most talented pool of footballers in decades, one of the most talented squads in national football history, we weren’t able to grab a single title. Not even a European title.
Just me pointing out that the Dutch Total Football Team, rightfully cited as one of the best teams ever, won fuck all, only qualified for the 1974 World Cup due to a clear referee error and in their last tournament went out in the group stage.
