North Shropshire by-election: Tory candidate ‘told not to speak to media because he knows little about area’

  1. I mean to be fair to the lad he’s had to be rushed in to cover a disgraced outgoing Tory MP in a pretty safe seat so it’s not exactly a shock they didn’t have a ready made stand in.

Cut the guy some slack. There’s plenty of time yet for him to fuck it up.

  2. But he is talking to the media and doing interviews and campaigning every day.

I suspect these “inside sources” are the same “inside sources” who are telling the press that Labour aren’t campaigning, i.e. it’s from the Lib Dem press office.

*I say this as someone campaigning for Labour in North Shropshire.

  3. This is the new standard in Tory Candidates: not actually familiar with their Constituency because their Donors are in Moscow anyway.

  4. The Mail article summed it up quite nicely – they interviewed the former head of the local tory association in Market Drayton about why he defected. He said he wanted a candidate that “knew there wasn’t a bus service to Telford Hospital”.

I think we’re seeing austerity chickens coming home to roost here. Shropshire isn’t the same as similarly attractive tory areas in the South East; it isn’t insulated from the effects of austerity by proximity to London.

I think conservatives are keen to write this off as a Boris issue. I think this is a “taking provincial safe seats for granted” issue. I also think both the economic fallout from the pandemic and the influx of “race for space” urban exiles has changed the dynamic in these kind of areas faster than anyone realised. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Shrewsbury to the South go Labour at the next election either, especially if they redraw the constituency boundaries as planned.

  5. This is what they give us

Tossers who don’t even know about the area and people they are representing

And people are voting for this?

  7. Just throwing my two pence in here. I live in North Shropshire, and have previously voted Tory (although in the past I have voted Lib Dem and Green). The Lib Dems have thrown everything at this by election. They have a local candidate and are relentlessly canvassing. I seem to get a flyer through the door every day, even had a door knock to try to engage with me. Genuinely giving the impression that they care about local people. The Tory canvassing in our village has been nil.

I will be voting Lib Dem this election, and judging by the number of Lib Dem banners in and around the village I think alot of other people will be too.

  8. He should use this as an opportunity to learn and listen then. It’s better to try and learn about the area than to pretend you already know all about it. Being genuine and showing a willingness to help the locals might score more points than saying nothing.
