In the 1960s and 1970s, many Maltese emigrated from Malta for a better life elsewhere.

Today there is talk that most Maltese youths want to emigrate (source: [https://www.independent.com.mt/articles/2021-10-21/local-news/60-of-youths-would-rather-move-to-elsewhere-in-Europe-than-stay-in-Malta-survey-finds-6736237703](https://www.independent.com.mt/articles/2021-10-21/local-news/60-of-youths-would-rather-move-to-elsewhere-in-Europe-than-stay-in-Malta-survey-finds-6736237703))

Honestly, if given the chance, will you emigrate?

  1. Yes. Unless the country suddenly makes a big U-Turn and actually steps up, I’m definitely packing and moving in a few years.

    It’s nice living somewhere, where:

    – Neighbours are respectful
    – You don’t wake up to noise pollution, like hunters, fireworks and people shouting to say Bongu
    – Going to the supermarket will not cost you an arm and a leg
    – Going out with no worries that a coke head will not run you over
    – Living in a country where laws are actually enforced (to the majority at least)
    – Walking on a pavement does not result in stepping on dog shit (that owners do not pick up) or tripping in garbage bags
    – Actually going out for a Sunday walk in the countryside, where you can actually walk and not have everything closed off with illegal private property and/ or ODZ construction

I do like Malta. It has history, my parents and friends are here and I have an “okay” job. But since 2019 onwards, people in power destroyed the environment and imposed a very disgusting culture. So, I thank them, whilst they are currently ordering coffee from their housekeeper, in their 6 bedroom ODZ villas, overlooking a very nice massive agricultural land, and I hope this disaster paid off.

  2. I have mixed feelings, love the country, proud to be Maltese, would be cool to emigrate for a few years but I can’t image being away from home for so long, I get incredibly home sick away from family

  3. I would have left yesterday if I could. Will definitely move abroad once I finish my uni course, and then most likely will not be moving back.

  4. For those of you who want to leave – what country would you like to move to and why?

Most of the time I hear about this from Maltese people they pick countries like the US, Canada or Ireland. All those three countries suffer from the same problems as Malta does. Powerty, out of control rental prices and if you want to live in a city then you’re going to get the same noise pollution as you get here.

  5. I’m one who voted probably yes, but I think some people just think that everything is horrible here which is not the case. For me, this island is my comfort zone but I feel like I need a change.

Meanwhile I know a lot of foreigners who have relocated here who found a better life. Everyone has their reasons but don’t forget that if you go somewhere else, you might find something better or worse, so make your due diligence first.

  6. I emigrated last year and almost fear the thought of living in Malta permanently again. However, I will say that living away from Malta has given me the chance to appreciate things about it that I couldn’t when I was there because they were getting lost among the traffic, air pollution, noise pollution, political scandals, etc. Another thing that is important for whoever is thinking of migrating is not to think that they’re going to find some perfect country where there are no problems because that just doesn’t exist.

  7. Spent 5 years in the UK. If people think that we have problems here then they might be surprised about what they will find abroad. No country is perfect, but we have an amazing balance of everything on this rock.

  8. Already did, never looked back.

PS: also the only time I was interested in politics was during the referendum and subsequent election. Had that thing not gone through I shiver at the thought of how much worse this country would be without having any form of control, and not having a way out as an individual.

  9. For me the answer is a probably not, i’m quite satisfied with life in Malta so far so unless a great opportunity like one for work come up i probably would never consider it, maybe for a few years but not permanently, although Malta has some major flaws i still love it.
