A dance troupe for female pensioners has been forbidden from performing in sombreros and pharaoh costumes by Germany’s national garden show after being accused of cultural insensitivity.

The AWO Ballet, which has been performing since the 1980s, was set up by a charity for the elderly and disabled to give women in their 60s, many of whom are widows, an outlet to socialise and dance.

The group was scheduled to take their “world cruise on a dream ship” show to the biennial garden show in Mannheim this month. But the garden show intervened at the last minute to tell them that six of their costumes were inappropriate, troupe leader, Erika Schmaltz, told The Telegraph.

The organisers were apparently concerned that the costumes, which included Japanese kimonos, Indian saris and Mexican sombreros, could offend the audience.

  2. This is so stupid. Seems like directly out of a South Park episode.

But by now they found a compromise. They altered the costumes a bit (the pharaos are Egyptian workers now, the Mexicans only wear a poncho but not a sombrero) and there will be a critical discussion on stage afterwards.

  3. I am in some groups that are against afrocentrism (some wewuzery is hilarious) and there are fuckload of Egyptians in those groups. They are not offended when someone dresses like them, from what I’ve seen people are actually glad others are enjoying their culture in the positive way. However they have a big problem when someone is stealing or rewriting their history. Did these people claim Egyptian history as their own? No, so fuck off

  4. I’m just waiting when the Americans stop wearing Disney princess costumes.

Oh wait, it’s only if you rip off a black people’s culture.

  5. Oh yes, god forbid then OFFEND ANY 4000 YEAR OLD EGYPTIAN FUCKING PHAROES -_- SORRY KHUFU! SORRY CLEOPATRA!!!!!!!!

    MADDDNESSS

So they weren’t “banned”. A private event told them they weren’t going to perform in those costumes. End of story. Nobody forbade them from doing their show the way they want elsewhere. But of course, that wouldn’t be the outrage story that the Telegraph wants to sell to their idiotic readers.

  7. cant wait for them to do an easter island themed show just to be banned for using 🗿

Like who they gonna offend?? they are all dead by there own demise…

  8. The ancient Egyptians no longer exist. Their culture is up for grabs for anyone, and the modern Egyptians are very explicit about the fact that they do not identify with their pagan ancestors.

    There are no victims here.

That said, cultural insensitivity is very, very common in Germany even today. Good fight, wrong target.

  9. LoL, how does something like this make for international news?

Those ballets are done by some now old people. They organize this like someone else would thier wedding. If they think something is inappropiate, then let it be. It isnt about cancel culture or anything. Just some old gals, who think this is thier lifes work and who want to make it “perfect”
