We’re 2 years away from the next election, how do we feel about this little man no longer being the face of Ireland?

  1. I look forward to Bertie being put firmly back into his box mere minutes after he announces he will be running for president.

As for Michael D no longer being president, meh. I think 14 years is too long for any one person to be president, so any change will be good.

  2. Hard to see anyone running that would be as objectively good.

Some of the others that ran the last time were pure muck. I hope there’s gonna be a decent candidate next time.

  3. He was a great ambassador, I love his Lord of the Rings style man of great power, tiny in stature with massive beasts as pets. I suspect we will go back to a soft motherly type figure who helped feed children in Africa again

  4. Let the poor bloke have a break.

I hope we get someone decent and not some racist gobdaw running on ‘all travellers suck balls’ or a Mr Business, money = entitlement guy.

  5. Mr 2.18% Gavin Duffy could try again. Couldn’t get any worse (even Dana did better her last time around). [to clarify: I don’t want him as president]

  6. I personally think he did a great job representing Ireland on the international stage.
As to who will replace him, I think someone who has the balls to call out bullshiit within Ireland would be a start.

Maurice McCabe wouldn’t be a bad start. I can imagine him sitting in the big house beside Garda Headquarters shouting bollox to that at every hint of corruption within the state.

  7. We’ve been so lucky with presidents from the two Mary’s to him. Such a breath of fresh air compared to the state of politics and media. I’m dreading the yahoos that run this time if last time was anything to go by. Can we petition for a third term?

  8. Last election, some nobody whose name I’ve thankfully forgotten went “Travellers bad!” and went from dead-last in a field of 7 to 2nd.

Just to be clear: I don’t care how you feel about the travelling community, and I am aware there’s a lot of issues that need fixing in that area. But he didn’t provide any solutions, or say anything constructive. He just tapped into a national fear/hatred and skyrocketed his popularity. I am worried that they’ll all try it next time.

  9. All jokes aside, we couldn’t have asked for a better ambassador to the rest of the world than Higgins. Highly doubt his successor will be worth half as much on the world stage.

  10. I will miss having President Higgins. I think he represented us well. I am proud that at a time when most of the world seemed to have voted for the worst kind of authoritarian inclined, wannabe bully boy strong men we had a tiny little poet as President. The dogs were a genius trick.

  11. As an American, I like this guy. He seems friendly and makes me smile every time I see him and his dog(s). I know precious little about what the Irish president actually does, but he seems like a good one.

  12. He will for always be the face of ireland, no matter which, if any, office he holds.

    Best regards,
    Rest Of The World

  13. I legit can’t think of a bad thing to say about him. He’s been a great leader and symbol for the nation.

Like, the worst controversy I can recall him getting embroiled in was being fond of the private jet.
