Despite sounding like a typical “haha Groen” statement, I actually don’t think it’s that bad of an idea.
Groen probably has the most incentive to get students to vote, so it’s not illogical for them to suggest this.
Makes sense to me. If the point of elections is to give everyone a chance to vote, it makes sense to make sure people aren’t disincentivized to vote.
Otherwise you can easily plan elections in exam season if you’re a party who doesn’t get a lot of young votes.
Oh brother. Voting takes 30 minutes and it’s on a sunday. Is it ideal, no. Should you be able to handle it, yes.
I wonder if people are going to want it, if the holidays are 1 day postponed….
Edit: going for them young voters. I wonder what the reaction of other parties will be.
Actually makes sense. If you’re a kotstudent you’ll have to pendel a few hours to your village because you’re not allowed to vote in the city where you study. I remember being very frustrated having to travel 4 hours just to vote back when I was studying.
The people in the comments opposing this truly are lost…
Situation A: they pass this and students don’t have to juggle their studies vs. their democratic rights. Everyone else has 0 consequences.
Situation B: this isn’t implemented. Students now have an extra worry the day before an exam, which puts an obstacle between them and exercising their democratic rights. Everyone else still has 0 consequences.
Hey, I agree with Groen.
Why would you care if you are not a student? What´s the problem?
Most peeps are in the weekend at their partents place (in the morning). So you are already in your village. You probably lose 1 hour voting. This is tbh not needed and a populist thing todo.
I don’t mind if the exam is pushed to earlier day then tho (which probably will happen) but people seem to forget that. They have to makeup that lost day somewhere… What are you gonna do? Make teachers work an extra day? We didn”t die when we had to vote. Hecc most people can’t even pay “kot”
We don’t need an exam free day, we just need the elections to be earlier in the year. (Currently they can be held from early April to early July as long as it is voted by the member states Parliament)
Many member states want to move the elections to the week of 9/05 because June is too difficult.
A good step in the right direction for Groen, but a long way to go.
Or if you think it takes to much time you just print a formuliertje ‘volmacht’ and let someone els in your hometown vote, that takes less time then finding an extra Nalu’tje…
If Groen could win voters with extra pollution they would, oh gascentrales…
Or you could just allow people to vote where their kot is, then you don’t have this trouble.
(And if you also allow people to choose to vote in municipal election where their kot is, then you also solve the current representation problem that cities with many students have a relevant part of their de facto demographic which has no possibility to vote there)
Can someone explain to me why this country doesn’t have early and/or mail-in voting?
Still hoping we implent a goverment system where each political party choses 1 male, 1 female and 1 X member and we drop them all in an arena with swords, maces, pikes, spears, goedendags, bows, crossbows and one arquebus with a single round.

Verkiezingen zijn toch op een zondag?
Opnieuw een fantastische beleidsprioriteit.
For goodness’ sake finally create a system where we can log in with our eID. Make the system open source so it can be subjected to independent review.
Still don’t understand why we are not allowing the same way dutch people can vote.
Dutch people can vote by using their (e-)id and a computer.
Takes 5 minutes of their time.
Belgium on the other hand…
Aren’t elections typically on Sunday in Belgium, and exams are not? Impact seems very low to me.
Yo, just deal with it, bende losers.
Ik moet 10 juni ook gewoon gaan werken.
Er bestaat zoiets als een volmacht.
Traveling hours to vote during exam period? (Before anyone says but it’s in the weekend, I do not go home during the exam period.) No decent peeps to actually vote for? Sounds like the prefect recipe to just not vote.
This would have saved me so much hassle in my student days, although the only time I had to vote then was in 2014. I don’t know how they’ll enforce this idea on the universities/”hogescholen” though. Less cumbersome alternatives would be to hold elections earlier in the year, like early May. I understand why simply giving someone a volmacht might seem sketchy, idk if they have to respect your choice of vote or if it gives them a de facto second vote.
Yes to this, voting is essential. Additionally we should include options to vote early like in other countries.
Students should be able to vote, I like that they are thinking about some solution. Also, I would like (half) a day of paid leave from work too. We have to vote, so then I would like some official vacation day too.
Tjah.
Realistically, most students will simply not go vote. This will hurt the parties who receive a larger than average share of the vote of young, educated people. There are about 260 000 students.
I wonder what parties receive a larger than average share of the votes of young and educated people, and which parties receiver a smaller share?
Why is it even in June in the first place? It’s usually earlier in the year, no? Or am I missing something?
Where do you draw the line though?
There’re people that have to work on sunday, that’s why the “volmacht” exists.
Seems to me like a way for Groen to gather some sympathy votes as they show that they care about the students right now. But try to hide, that they too mandated the curfew a few years ago.
I had to vote durkng exam period in the past, it was a nice break for me.
