Can’t wait for the people to cry about them being liberal loons, the same ones that also cry about them being uneducated thugs lol
I feel so bad for the next generation, this country is going down the pan in every way possible, how people can afford to live honestly surprises me
My sister works at a school referral unit for kids too anxious to eat, having gender dysphoria and selective mutism. Also a lot of spectrum kids that cant get put elsewhere, tons of crossover between the two. Being rejected from an early age messes with your self-esteem and they are very suggestible.
She’s undersiege and has major burnout.
The fate of the world plus the hypersocial world of social media is a lot to put on very sensitive kids that take things literally and cannot laught it off.
The world is a very distressing place. I hope they find the peace they need in life. Good luck to them.
The Guardian ” Dear children – you’re all going to die from climate change!!!”
Also the Guardian “Surprise rise in climate anxiety in children”
As a young person isn’t this just highly dependent on what group you ask? Never met someone who gave that much of a shit
Could just be an excuse for poor mental health generally
It’s hilarious that a media outlet responsible for climate hysteria is now reporting on the mental health of those impacted by it.
Not at all. We can’t predict anything.
Imagine if someone had said to you, we would be in lockdown in a few years, 5 years ago lol.
It makes me really apathetic, why save or plan for the future if its going to be unpleasant.
And I dont even qualify as a young person anymore.
This isn’t to dismiss climate change which I know is happening…
But
Let’s be honest most kids from the 50s til 89 had a very real fear of a full on nuclear war over their heads. Before that they had actual bombs landing, before that would fear the plague or the devil or just basic/treatable to us illnesses.
When I was 11 in 1979 I became scared after seeing Horizon talking about germ warfare and genetic engineering, my Dad said that the world was going to pot for as long as he could remember, and suggested asking my Grandad who he reckoned would say the same. All the time I was young nuclear war was feared also. I’m sure it’ll probably turn out ok

edit – I wouldn’t worry too much about Biden’s Alaska project, it’s probably only a small % of all the damge being done – at least we live in a country that is getting simewhere reducing emissions.
Of course they do. Its just another thing that we’ve thrown at them that they wonder how they’ll cope with. Want a house? Yeah maybe. Want a sustainable energy? Yeah good luck with that? Want a future thats not dominated by some corporate oligarch? Not gonna happen.
Our kids can see what future they’ve got and its shit. There’s no support out there, the programmes to lift people up all got defunded and if your unemployed these days your just a sacrificial lamb.
Mental health issues rising in line with a reduction in quality of life isn’t really a surprise is it?
Media causing mass panic so they can report on mass panic.
Perpetual news, and you’re the fuel.
I laugh at anyone who gets sucked into this now. Used to pity, but now I think they deserve it. It’s Darwin.
ITT: a lot of deniers.
Very sad.
I’m looking forward to the moment when climate anxiety is supplanted by climate *rage*.
I can empathise with this. I grew up at a time when we all thought there might be an all out nuclear war at any moment. And this wasn’t hysteria, the threat was very real, and we are very lucky that it didn’t happen. It used to keep me awake at night as a teenager.
My parents were born just before the start of WWII, and have childhood memories of rushing to an air raid shelter in the middle of the night. And on occasion seeing that some local houses were no longer there the following morning.
The climate emergency is no less traumatic than those situations. Well, probably the immediacy and actuality of the destruction in the war was more traumatic, but all are very serious situations.
But the common problem in every one of these situations is – what do you actually do about it? They all would have required global, political cooperation to avoid them, and that was never going to happen. Nazi Germany and the Allies were never going to compromise. Russia and the US were never going to compromise in the cold war.
China, India, and other emerging economies want to have the same prosperity as the West, and we aren’t going to take a step down to allow them to. So between us, we will run a very real risk of losing everything.
We all know what has to happen, but I despair of anyone figuring out how to actually make it happen.
I think it’s something to be concerned about and change your ways collectively to help reduce it.
However…
If you’re losing sleep over it, then there’s a deeper issue (albeit the article does state that they are having mental health support).
But if my daughter woke me up in the middle of the night because of a drilling scheme in another country, I would genuinely consider reducing how much access they have to the internet etc.
Like I said, it’s something to worry about, but not at that age. Media already blasts everything 10x. I’m sure we’ll be seeing “this could be the hottest summer yet, reaching 50c in some places!!”.
I’ve seen a couple of comments from people in other subs over the past few months on how they’ve decided to not have kids because of the war between Ukraine/Russia & the climate. Like fucking hell, that’s way past the line of being dramatic.
Is there anything that doesn’t take its toll on young people’s mental health
Until they learn to not believe everything read on the Internet.
As an aussie, i can confirm this is affecting my mental health
What having basically every media source funnel black pill takes into young people brains all day everyday is having a negative affect on their mental health?
Wow that’s absolutely crazy can’t believe that happened.
Stop putting the world on your shoulders. I’m 19 and its something I can’t control so I don’t let it concern me.
The world is on fire, fascists are on the rise again.
So yes
If this thread is anything to go be, we are so fucked.
Moron island.
Too many kids spending too much time on social media. That’s the problem here.
It isn’t the “climate crisis”. Their values are just messed up.
And guess what? When your values are messed up and all you have is materialism and ideas from TV and social media that don’t hold up in the real world, you’ll be messed up too.
What crisis? Al Gore said the Artic would melt and it did not. That’s because its a pseudoscience.
I don’t blame them, considering how much we’ve fucked up the future of the planet. That’s why I have a lot of sympathy for thier increasingly extreme protests. When you see your future looking so grim, you just want to lash out.
The blue hair brigade are all looneys anyway. Normal young people are perfectly fine.
A couple of generations back it was nuclear armageddon. Now it’s climate catastrophe (nuclear threat hasn’t gone away , we’ve just gotten used to it).
No other species is as a good at self sabotage as humans.
It’s not stopping people having more kids though is it. Birth rates may be slowing but the overall population is still increasing
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Stop scaring kids over things they cannot control
