13. If you do a bit of research you’ll find that almost all the genocide stories come from one source – a guy called Adrian Zenz. If you do a bit of research into him you’ll see that he’s a christian fundamentalist nutter who based his findings from 8 interviews. The Uighur population has been increasing in China over the last decade or so and they are given more benefits than Han Chinese – greater access to healthcare and and education for example. Companies are also given tax breaks to relocate to Xinjiang in order to help improve the local economy.

    I’ve also read about cultural genocide – Uighur culture and language being erased. I live in China and went to Xinjiang last year. Their language is everyone – on every street sign, every menu etc.. along with Mandarin of course. Mosques are everywhere. I went to a Uighur cultural centre full of Chinese tourists coming to learn about the history and culture of the Uighurs. It was a bit tacky but still…

    So in my opinion the claims of genocide are a bit hard to believe. Thats not to say a certain amount of oppression has gone on there – look into the Urumqi riots and the rise of islamic fundamentalist activity in Xinjiang for a better understanding of this.
