USNews is well known here in the USA as a legitimate source for their “rankings” for anything you could ever imagine. They have Portugal listed as the least bureaucratic country in the world, which frankly I find astounding. Do you agree or disagree? How does the bureaucracy compare to other EU countries?

  1. I do not believe this even a little bit. The SEF is easily the most bureaucratic system I’ve ever dealt with (speaking as an american)

  2. tag humor.

fyi one of the major reasons why portugal is having an housing crisis is because of super low level of new houses.
and that is mainly on the license.. which take about 2+y to get results

  3. Any source that claims that Portugal is the least bureaucratic country in the world is the Poster Child for untrustworthy sources.

  4. It’s very easy to get in touch with government agencies at Loja do Cidadão, and a lot of processes are digitalized, such as medical prescriptions. I can’t say whether it is the least bureaucratic country or not, but it’s not as bureaucratic as some people in this sub make it out to be, so I would take the more dramatic comments with a (large) grain of salt (it’s mostly people fed up with the current government).

  5. Yes, as long as you bribe a public official you can get anything done really quickly and without much trouble at all.

  6. Lol, this must be an April Fool, whoever made that list if they are serious they should be fired!

  7. Bullshit. Portugal is a bureaucratic nightmare and a main driver for me to get a different citizenship. And I only deal with 1% of what most Portuguese have to deal with.

  8. Don’t confuse digitalization (which is at good levels) with beaurocracy (which is awfully widespread).

As an example: different government agencies do not communicate to each other and therefore a document provided by say a city council must be all stamped and “authenticated” before it can be handed over to another servive like the IRS or Finance office.

Portugal has a severe beaurocratic problem that arises from lack of trust in its own institutions given the very high corruption indexes.

  9. I don’t want to generalise, but the individual who made that list probably has never set foot outside of America.

Portugal is one of the worst countries in terms of bureaucracy, it’s horrendously bad.

  10. Most people answering this thread have absolutely ZERO idea of bureaucracy levels in any other country and only know the portuguese reality. Keep that in mind.
