‘Complete junk’: American tanker assesses Russian T-90A arriving in the U.S.

  1. Not worth a laugh if it’s employed properly and you find yourself on the receiving end of it.

Tl;dr – technological level doesn’t matter as much as crew training and proper use.

  2. Well the Ukrainians are having to do with even older tanks, mostly T-72’s. Europe has promised to give newer Challengers and Leopards but the backbone is still soviet tech.

  3. It always depends on what target you’re going to fight, it’s probably junk when fighting a more modern MBT like Leo2 or leclerk but totally fine and dominating when fighting rag tag militias without any access to armoured vehicles.

So yes it’s junk in Ukraine but a game changer in most African countries

  4. To be fair, Russia has always been a ‘quantity over quality’ country… because there is nothing they haven’t been able to solve if they throw enough bodies at the problem… sometimes literally.

  5. So, the ‘journalist’ bases its whole article on one tweet from someone who claims to be an Iraq War veteran? It’s pretty obvious that Russian tanks are no match to Western MBTs, but how is this a credible source?

  6. What a shitty “Article” it’s just commenting on one tweet, nowhere does the tweet say “Complete Junk”.

  7. I find his comments rather odd. His Abrams was in a low intensity war with very little combat and lots of time to conduct services and maintenance on their Abrams. The T-90 was in a high intensity warzone where simply leaving you’re tank to conduct maintenance is a danger from artillery, drones and so on. Even just re-fuelling is a danger because you aren’t under cover and are stationary. Keeping you’re tank clean and tidy inside isn’t a concern, staying alive and keeping the tank functioning are all that matters. Conducting a single mission and then taking the tank back behind lines for refit isn’t a reality in the war in Ukraine, the tanks are on the front lines for weeks on end with minimal intervention on the internals of the vehicles unless they actually break. Round counts are magnitudes higher on these tanks then any tank did in the GWOT.

As for the the quality of the internals of a T-90 from pictures that I have seen don’t look poor quality to me. Like any tank inside the equipment is very robust in nature and functional, it’s not an iphone. You can see stills and video of the inside of a captured T-90 in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOLVCl3c8vQ maybe the fit and finish isn’t as good as a Western tank but I don’t see how that is all that important other then cutting yourself on the edge of panels perhaps?

Edit: Some interesting footage that came up today, thermal footage from a T-90M firing to 4210 meters with thermal optics. Clrealy shows they have very effective thermal optics and their firing control systems are up to par considering they are hitting a very small target at that range. https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineRussiaReport/comments/12rlqv5/ru_pov_russian_t90m_hitting_ukrainian_observation/

  8. Sensationalistic article based on the a twitter message of some random military guy whose twitter feed is mainly reposts of memes ridiculing and shitting on Russia. Not like I’m against that, they deserve it, but it’s definitely no an impartial, weighted opinion of an expert in its field.

I would love to read a detailed analysis by a western expert that is capable of going beyond the “junk/not junk” criteria.
