There’s no winning for them apparently. People are upset that they’re spending time and money researching their slavery links, but if they didn’t do it, people would be getting upset that they’re ignoring their links with slavery.
It’s one hell of a statement to make. A bit like saying a fish will study it’s links to water.
Exploiting people is the whole point of being a monarch. Serfdom and Enslavement are both forms of exploitation to different degrees. Feudal Britain was about having our ancestors toil in the field under exploitative landlord rules, but they would have gone to chains, whips, and guns for the entire peasant population if they had the means.
Maybe use the time and money to investigate his uncle, Lord Mountbatten
He’s deffo making a statement with what he’s be on with the last few months, I guess least he actually seems to be going about doing stuff unlike Liz and I’m all for research in the name of education.
A good proportion of them would’ve personally blessed the ships sent off to enforce anti-slavery blockades.
Not sure what he expects to achieve. The sort of people he’s trying to pander to will always hate the royals, and this will just encourage them to push him even more. It’s like that racist charity woman.
Does this guy even want to be king? He already gave up on being ‘defender of the faith’.
Modern slavery is obviously an issue, but the kind of slavery this relates to is ancient history. It’s not relevant today except as an object of historical study.
The palace is co-operating and providing access to the royal archives to the PhD student carrying out the study independently.
There’s no financial support from the King, no palace influence, it’s just a PhD study by someone who has no ties to the royals.
You lot seem really outraged over nothing.
Don’t tell me they’re going to bring up the Norman oppression and the Doomsday book?
Ohh “links” whoops misread that, and it didn’t even surprise me
I will make a prediction. Yes there were links, lets donate £5m to some corrupt charity that where the money disappears on its founders who then move on to the next grift.
Complete waste of time, this is not the US, education is free for the poor at the point of use in the UK and anyone can improve their lot without waiting for mythical reparations which makes no sense in the first place.
So when the study confirms what we already know – the royal family had ties to slavery. What then?
I don’t think you need the study to know the answer
The amount of money we paid to free the slaves and these cretins still never shut up about wanting money.
It’s just baffling.
It’s about nothing other than money.

Hahahaha fucking hell I misread that as “kinks” oh my god
It’s great that King Charles is finally acknowledging the role of the royal family in the slave trade, but let’s not forget that the monarchy has been built on the exploitation of people of color for centuries. The royal family owes a debt to those who suffered under their rule, and a mere ‘study’ is not enough to make up for their crimes.
I wonder when West African royal aristocrats will do the same. Nobody profited more from the slave trade than them but they get a free pass because they’re the same race as their victims. Modern logic.
Is he going to have the balls to study the family’s Nazi links?
Dumb. Either no links will be found – and people will say the report is a whitewash. Or a link will be found – and suddenly the bottomless begging bowls will appear.
The Prince’s Trust and The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund fill this role, and have amassed some colossal sums for charitable purposes. This includes raising approximately £140 million a year for good causes and adding approximately £1.4 billion to the UK economy in the last ten years.3 Oct 2022 plus the 1 billion he said he didn’t want this year from the wide farms.
Off with his head I hear the left say!
Well duh it’s a royal family, it’s not like King Charles or the late queen held the whip. The past is horrible and a light should be shone so those who suffered are not forgotten but who are we meant to be mad at here? People who have been dead for 150 years?
Let me save them some money.
Are you the King of England? Yes
Did your ancestors at one point own/rule the largest kingdoms in recent history? Yes.
Result: Ok so good news and bad news Yeah so you were like major slave owners but at least your face is on all our money.
It’s a pretty open-and-shut case – for most of the Transatlantic Slave Trade the King or Queen owned the company which had a monopoly in Britain on buying and selling enslaved people (Royal African Company).
Is this a can of worms that shouldn’t be opened?
Is it just Britain, for some peculiar reason, that has to ‘make amends’?
I wonder how many people know Britain ended the slave trade, spending a massive amount of money to free slaves worldwide, sending Royal Navy ships all over the oceans hunting slave ships, fighting the slavers and setting the slaves on board free. Many sailors died doing this. Do their relatives get compensation?
The debt incurred ending slavery was paid off only during the last few years….meaning millions of us paid tax which contributed to this debt. I paid some to this debt throughout my working life, over 40yrs.
So, what do we do about the Middle East and Africa who still have slaves?
Wouldn’t attention be better focused on the present slaves in Africa and freeing them, rather than what happened in a different century when none of us were alive or involved?
Then there’s reparations.
Shouldn’t we have DNA ‘ancestry tracing’ done with anyone who demands reparations? Two celebs in Britain have had that done on a TV programme, and were shocked to find their ancestors were African slave traders.
I see the Guardian buried the actual _fuck_ outta the news about bent, corrupt leftwing Scots politicians by deciding on that exact day to start squealing righteously about the royals and slavery.
The owners of the Guardian were slave-drivers too. They should cancel the Guardian, for a start.
Because he’s in his 70’s any findings or effects won’t have any baring on him or his hugely privileged children
I think this is a very very positive step! I am all for a monarchy that has a sense of responsibility and accountability to the people it is meant to look after. We cannot expect perfection from a family, and I am all for chasing down its corrupt parts with the full force of the law, but a figurehead like Liz and now Charles is such a powerful force. I hope this is a sign of more to come.
Serious question: Was it even the same royal family when slavery was active?
