So… About a year ago or so me and my family went to Europe to see some family. We went to a few different countries to get the most out of it. While in Czech, we went to go see the bone cathedral(?) there. We got some merch to remember the trip and I ended up getting this beanie as well as a few other things (still wear a ring I got there daily!).

I remember the woman at the front desk telling me and my dad that the hat said something that went along with memento mori. I don’t remember exactly what it was. But I was looking at it again after so long and decided to translate it. I think she was trolling us lol

So, is this right? It made me and my parents laugh so hard. I wore it around for the trip too and I find it really funny if some tourist guy just had this on a hat lmao. Someone please tell me if it’s right!!

The hat says “mám pod čepicí” which word to word translation is “i have [something] under a hat” – u could understand that it is a person that is somehow smart or know something as the old Czech saying goes (ten má pod čepicí = he has [something] under a hat). Personally I don’t see there meaning any close to “Memento mori”.

  2. As the other commenter said already it says “I have [something] under my hat” which means “I am smart/know things”. Unless of course it’s meant to be read as “I have [a skull] under my hat” which is technically memento mori

  5. Fyi – google translate was wrong because we do not use ø, thats just there for aesthetic, so google translate didn’t recognise it

  8. It’s double entendre, mám pod čepici originaly means “I’m smart” but the skull makes it mean I also have a skull inside my head, reminding me of my mortality. It’s pretty dark humor.

  10. They even wrote this on some new CNG powered buses here in the Czech Republic, as those have a big hump on its roof where the CNG fuel tank is

  12. **Ø** is not present in the czech alphabet, its porbably simply a design. But it translates to ‘i have it under my hat’, considering theres a skull it could mean ‘i have a skull under my hat’.
