Doesn’t Malta need tourists?

Five weeks ahead of a weekend trip, I can’t find any flights for less than around €600.

Why is it so absurdly expensive to fly there from Amsterdam? I could fly to New York City with that kind of money.

[Someone](https://timesofmalta.com/articles/view/cost-earth-travel-right-now.964199#:~:text=The%20national%20carrier%2C%20Air%20Malta,frequency%20for%20high%20seat%20prices) said prices would level out by now, but that hasn’t happened.

  1. That’s what’s going on lately, I have a flight in two weeks and since JANUARY the price have been the same. I mean, it’s 4 months in advance and not even then they are cheaper. We need tourists but the airlines needs to compensate for COVID and blatantly rob us

  2. I can get flights from stansted for £71?

Maybe think about changing location? Might mean a bit more time? But cheaper

  3. Most flights are always fully booked right now and people are paying those prices. Airlines are businesses, if they can sell their capacity at the highest prices, they’re doing everything right.

How would it change the tourist situation, if the same amount of tickets were sold cheaper?

If anything, in such a market, a competitor might open more routes at slightly lower prices to skim some of the existing business. For the consumers/passengers, that would increase offered seats and drive down prices again.

  4. Bobby Monday morning:
Get me Mr O’Leary on the phone…let see if he’d like a tax break in exchange for cheaper flights…again

  5. Sadly 5 weeks before heading to Malta in JUNE is wayyyyy too late.
Between May and August Malta has around 1 million tourists on our shores at any given moment…there’s only 500k of us here so ya it gets full fast.

For some solance, take a look at hotel reservations and prices for an idea how busy this summer is gonna be

  6. Where are you flying from? If it’s an equally touristic place, prices can skyrocket. I scrapped a trip to Spain in july for this reason. Then sometimes you can find random destinations super cheap hehe, we did Sardegna at ferragosto last year for like 35 euro and booked a week ahead.

Edit: just saw Amsterdam hehe. Not sure why it’s so pricey, but you can fly out of Eindhoven with Ryanair for 200 return in June, which isn’t so bad 🙂

  7. Demand vs supply, basic concept all around the world. How many airlines go to New York and how many airlines go to Malta?

  8. The air malta website (if that’s who you’re trying to book with) is totally bugged out. If you keep clicking lots of options, the prices keep increasing until the next calendar day when it resets.

  9. the maltese tourism is slowly booming every year especially when international artists go for 1 night and post about malta chris ferne has the prices by the balls

  10. Yeah the prices are actually insane. I live in the UK and to get a flight to Malta over Easter to see family and friends for a week was going to be around €500…

I said sod that and I’ve remained here.

  11. Airmalta flights to and from amsterdam are ludicrous, I have a wedding to attend and I’ve been looking for a reasonably price flight for months but can’t justify spending 600+ on flight tickets. As someone who has to travel between the two place relatively frequently I can suggest you try the Ryanair flight from Eindhoven or even the airmalta flight from Brussels which is usually quite a bit cheaper. You can get a direct train from Brussels airport to amsterdam centraal every hour or so

  12. Where are you flying from? Which airline have you looked at ?

Anyways, yes costs are insane. Nothing to do with tourism, I hope we are not stupid enough to subsidize flights for holiday makers!

  13. No idea, reserved my tickets a couple months ago, came here on 3rd of april and leaving tomorrow. Plane ticket (both ways) was 50 euros in total.

  14. Problem with the Dutch aviation tax. I live in Amsterdam and going literally anywhere by plane has gotten super expensive. I always book in advance when I travel to Malta. Take it to r/thenetherlands instead, becauase it’s getting really bad.

And for the point on NYC, welcome to the principles of competition. Amsterdam – New York is operated by at least 3 carriers that I know of (Delta, KLM, United), whereas the Malta – Amsterdam route is operated solely by Air Malta (no, Ryanair to Eindhoven doesn’t count when the train to/from any Amsterdam NS station to Eindhoven (plus the airport bus) is close to €50.

There used to be Transavia operating the route too. Maybe they start it up again hopefully soon, because some compeition plus increased frequencies are in dire need on this route due to Brexit driving more passengers via Amsterdam and Frankfurt nowadays.

  15. Open your web browser in incognito and search on google flights.

There are flights in May via Frankfurt for 300€ round trip or direct flights with British Airways for about 300€.

These are from Amsterdam or Rotterdam

  16. Via Düsseldorf (DUS). Non-Stop. ~260 EUR.

Take a car, free parking nearby Airport in a neighborhood (Unterrath, Eckamp, Ratingen, check other spots close by via maps).

  17. tickets usually become more expensive a month before departure, because there are already few of them (

(!) but Malta is worth visiting, a friendly country, a sea of pleasure
