Time set for national mobile phone emergency warning test

  1. I’m frequently somewhere with every possible natural disaster and so I’m instinctively terrified of these. So, I deeply appreciate the advanced warning.

  2. I would wager a yesrs salary on the fact that there will be cock up resulting in an erroneous emergency alert within the first few years of it being implemented. There will be mass panic, looting and a half hearted apology by politicians in the aftermath.

  3. I had no idea there would be sound with the message -glad I clicked the link. For anyone who doesn’t know it will play if your phone is on silent too (spelling).

  4. Funny hearing so many people kick off about this on social media, claiming the Government are controlling them. I thought they were already controlling us via the covid vaccine microchip

Some people really need to get a life

  5. The only bad outcomes I can see manifesting due to this emergency warning test system are incompetence and rorts. Besides any false alarms due to a totally unqualified person being given a plush contract and handing it over to his unqualified cousin (or another incompetent) to implement, like they did before, or the eye watering bill for the whole project, because all such projects require eye watering, I can only see good coming out if this. /s

  6. Don’t understand why people have a problem with it. Most use GPS of some sort, social media or even pay with their phone.

The only annoyance would be false alerts as I live in an area which gets flooded but I live at the top of the hill so I’m fine, the others well not so much.

  7. Was on holiday in Romania in summer and got these warnings whenever a bear wandered into town

    Quite the wake-up at 3am.

Put phone on airplane mode overnight and it stopped

  8. Some conspiracy nuts have been claiming that it’s going to activate a tracking chip in the phone. They been posting these claims on Facebook!

  9. People will complain, even though it’s been announced, people will have a panic attack and demand to know why they weren’t informed.

“I was in Waitrose with Timmy and Meredith, an alarm went off on my phone, I thought I was under attack from Putin, I told my children I loved them and would see them in heaven”

  10. If you have a Samsung phone, go to your settings, type in Emergency Alert at the top. Select the ‘Emergency Alerts’ option and slide the ‘Allow Alerts’ thumb switch to the off position.

  11. I just received one! Bit surprised considering it’s not the advertised time & date. This is on Three (3) Network:

Phone was locked and on Silent. The Alert turned on the screen but made no sound.

  12. I worry about people like my grandad – people with dementia or not the best grip on reality getting this message and freaking out. It’s a good thing, but I do hope vulnerable people aren’t going to be left to think they’re in danger.

  13. It’s a cell broadcast – a capability built into every SIM-enabled mobile device since time began. The cellular tower beams a message to every device in the range of the tower and the device responds with a WHOO or whatever the command is.

Airplane mode should ought to stop that. I would do this on Sunday at 5pm after a all-weekend headsup on every channel. It’s intrusive and disturbing and Dowden is a clown.

  14. If it really bothers anyone you can turn off emergency alerts in your phone settings. I did second I heard about all this.

  15. This is a wonderful initiative and although it isn’t perfect it has saved lives around the world and could save yours one day.

If you’re in an abusive relationship or living with somebody dangerous, or if you know anybody who is in a dangerous domestic situation, you may be worried about a secret “secondary phone” being discovered by an abuser when this test happens.

When you spread the word about this test, please also consider spreading this video by the domestic violence charity, Refuge, explaining how to switch off emergency alerts:

  16. In all seriousness, there are many people in abusive, controlling relationships that have a secret / hidden phone that need to be made aware of this, and turn the feature off before the 24th.

Last thing they will want is the consequences of their hidden device being discovered by a crazy partner.
