  1. More accurate to say it’ll be fully funded out of general taxation, but that’s not as headline-friendly. We all pay for the HSE.

ETA this isn’t a criticism. The less that gets charged at the point of use, the better. But *nothing* is “free” in a public health service – we all share the cost of delivering it, and that’s a positive thing.

  2. Good, a lot of it went unpaid and trying to chase with collection agencies was probably costing more than what it was worth.

  3. Please get rid of the A and E charge as well please.

I admitted myself to hospital a few years ago due to having severe suicidal ideation. A few weeks down the line and I’m getting letters threatening court action or referring to debt collectors.

Yep, because that’s what I needed back then.

€100 is extremely steep for the utterly shoddy care you get as well.

  4. Deadly! I had a bill from the hospital, a measly 80 euro. A collection agency hounded me for weeks, they called saying they showed up at my shared house asking if the car outside was mine (they didn’t even go to the house from what I can tell) – felt like pure intimidation tactics. Mind you, I’d tried multiple times to pay the bill but my bank kept flagging it as a suspicious transaction so it wouldn’t go through. Anyone who’s short of money, or chronically ill/disabled shouldn’t have to deal with such intimidating methods of collection

  5. I still think everything wrong with the health service in Ireland would be fixed in 5 years if they got some fucking good leadership in with a view to modernising it. It’s complete fantasy that it would ever happen but I’d bet good money even people in the HSE, GPs and hospitals would support it if it meant better service and generally better pay. Reducing management overhead, automation and just avoiding manual processes could save us millions and that would help everyone but the current management of the HSE. In a modern society you shouldn’t be worried about paying a fee when you are in medical distress.

  6. Great stuff.

I’m living abroad in the US and between childbirth and cancer have seen the guts of the US health system. It’s fantastic for us as we have good insurance – but for people not so lucky..well it’s shit

Sure..the HSE is creaking around the edges but to have it so accessible and getting MORE so is great

  7. A relative of my had an appointment for a surgery for a set date. She arrived ready for the date and waited all day for the surgery, but it got postponed till next day after waiting in the hospital all day. Next day came, same story cause they were just so busy for surgeos. Long story short, she stayed over for 4 nights until they had time for the surgery. Then she gets a bill for the nights spent.
