Citizens’ Assembly: Gaurds Advocating Strongly Against Decriminalisation/Legalisation. Says it Will Compromise Stop/Search Powers + Increase Drug Tourism

  1. Also civil law enforcement authorities have come out against curtains, blinds, and other window coverings as such concealment devices increase the difficulty for said authorities to watch every single thing you do.

  2. I mean in fairness the CA has to hear that point of view. It’s not really a legitimate process if you don’t listen to a steelman version of every perspective.

  3. Did anyone expect the Gardai to lobby for any other viewpoint?

The Gardai don’t make the law they just enforce it. Their opinions on potential legislation will be very valuable, their views on the society decriminalisation leads to is irrelevant.

  4. And how exactly will it Compromise Stop/Search Powers?

If it is brought too Decriminalisation/Legalisation etc, then they will have more time to prevent more serious crimes no?

I mean like catching someone with a slab of dutch gold in the boot with the intent of sale and supply… Oh wait…

  5. I agree with not wanting drug tourism; Amsterdam has a great history and culture but unfortunately attracts the worst type of tourist. Amsterdam actually runs *anti*-tourism campaigns.

But that’s not a good enough reason to keep weed illegal. I do think we’ll get a massive influx of weed tourists given we’re also an English-speaking country, but that’s just another issue we’ll have to tackle.

  6. Tough shit Gardai, those are not valid reasons to keep it illegal. Harm reduction should be the only thing anyone is thinking about here.

  7. The subtext here is that guards are afraid they’ll lose the right to instantly search anyone at will just by pretending they smell weed whenever it suits them.

  8. History has proven prohibition just strengthens organized crime.

They just want to be able to stop and search any person at will. Poor them

Didn’t Portugal decriminalize (or was it legalize?) all drugs. Do they have a problem, no… Unless you consider Americans fleeing their own country and snatching up properties a problem. What a liberty.

  9. If the guards weren’t busy chasing down lads for a few joints then they might actually have the time to tackle violent crime.

  10. Since when is the sale of alcohol to every Oirish American, lads holiday, stag and hen party not also drug tourism? Or are we still pretending alcohol isn’t a drug?

  11. Yet the Guinness brewery is regarded as one of the best tourist attractions in Dublin which is centred around alcohol which is a drug that is regulated.

People use it responsibly and irresponsibly daily.

  12. >Says it Will Compromise Stop/Search Powers

Isn’t that an argument in favour of decriminalisation? Guards can spend their time on better things and marginalised youths will face less harassment.

Also, love to know what data or research they are relying on?

  13. So it’ll increase tourism and stop Gardaí from stopping people on the street and searching them.

    …this is argument *against* it?

  14. Their real problem is that if drugs are legal they will have to stop squandering resources chasing teenagers over 50 bags and instead tackle scumbag gangs.

  15. It will massively decrease the guards workload.. I doubt this is the view of the majority the guards. Removing the power of drug gangs can’t be a bad thing.

  16. Half the states in the US seem to have legalised marijuana with the only side effects being more tax revenue, regulation of the industry, and putting the sketchy dealers out of business. Amsterdam is one option, but there are clearly other ways to do it.

  17. Think the idea of it increasing drug tourism is a bit of a myth, never really happened in Portugal or Canada, only place it happened was the Netherlands (just Amsterdam really) but that’s cause they kind of went out there way to make that the case

  18. Not seeing a problem. I was stopped and searched by the Gardai looking for drugs. Fwiw, I had no drugs, they just didn’t like me waiting for a friend outside a nightclub on the North side.

If drugs were legal they might not have groped and mauled me just for waiting for five minutes.

We currently have booze tourism, don’t expect cannabis tourism would be more dangerous.

  19. This is “it should be illegal because it is illegal” levels of stupidity from the Guards. Drug tourism *from where?*

Stopping and searching people *for what?* legal drugs? ffs.

  20. By “compromising stop and search powers” he means we wont need them any more and it’ll make it harder to hassle young lads over nothing.
