I recently became interested in bivariate choropleth maps and I wanted to try one myself. This is basically an experiment to see if anyone who did not actively create this map can make any sense of it. If the map is slightly confusing, I have made a [bar chart](https://twitter.com/1047_eu/status/1473660261227716613/photo/1) with the same data that should be a bit clearer.
According to political psychology research on the subject, people use what they know about
national politics to make assesments of EU politics. In countries with low-performing governmental institutions, citizens see the EU as a ‘savior’. People who distrust the government trust the EU institutions, and vice versa. In countries with well-performing governmental institutions, distrust in EU institutions is an expression of a general ‘anti-establishment’ sentiment. Here, people who trust the government also tend to trust the EU institutions.
French people don’t trust anyone lol
Sceptic France, trusting no one. ^ ^
And Germany be like: … Eh.
How can this map be correct? About 80% of Turkish population doesn’t trust the government (including AKP voters)
I’d be very red on this graph
There’s nothing to trust about the Latvian government – a permanent coalition and permanent opposition that benefits from ethnonational head-butting, all the while pushing austere neo-liberal policies. The EU, at the very least, has a plurality of opinions.
Why is Turkey on the map?
Serbia, Greece and France, trusting nobody, including themselves
France has been seriously polluted by somme europhobics… They still havent’learned lessons from the brexit disaster. it’s time to become reasonable again. The country would be nothing without EU
We (the french people) are so lost in politics nowadays that’s crazy…
I’m pretty sure our color is not accurate and should be the same as Bulgaria’s or Poland’s. Trust in the EU has been decreasing slightly but steadily lately.
Since the pandemic I’ve become extremely disillusioned with Dutch politics, not just because of how terrible we are dealing with every wave. So much other shit has been happening too. Off the top of my head:
– Toeslagenaffaire
– Pushing Omtzigt under the bus for having integrity
– Consistent lying to parliament by the government
– We were way behind with vaccinations and now we are again with boosters (that’s why we have a lockdown atm)
– Taking forever to form a new government even tough it’s obvious that the coalition will be the same
– Utterly terrible management of Schiphol airport since the pandemic
I could go on but I’m getting mad typing this. The saddest part is that Rutte/VVD are as strong as ever in the polls because “there is no better alternative”. The bar for VVD voters is even lower than CDU in Germany.
Yep, the Irish prefer the EU more so than our own government.
Personally I’m in favour of a FBI style EU ‘federal’ police force to tackle corruption, white collar crime and government graft.

Portugal again can into Eastern Europe.
Un peuple n’a qu’un seul ennemi dangereux, c’est son gouvernement.
Don’t disappoint Albania, EU. <3
Damn we sure do bitch and whine a lot on social media about both governments but chalk this up to another peice of evidence that twitter/social media is not real life. Clearly Swedes trust both way more than average
I don’t understand why the survey covered also non-EU countries. For a non-EU citizen, what does exactly mean to either trust or not trust the European Union, given that comunitary laws, acts and regulations don’t affect him (at least not directly)?
I like the French approach of just distrusting everything
Hate to say this but somehow now I feel skeptic on EU because they won’t help my country over ongoing threats from China.
Looks like Iceland turned into a tartan square
Can confirm I trust our government. Even if our leadership isn’t on my political side, I still trust they’ll do a fine job. Our President right now is in the right wing party that’s viewed quite badly by many at home and abroad. He was a perfectly good President and fulfilled the role well (they don’t have more power than his colleagues). I certainly don’t hate him and that’s a good thing.
People in Portugal don’t trust their government, and yet they all got vaccinated without problem? May I know the secret to this miracle? Asking for a country.
Most of Europe: Has an opinion
Britain and France: Trust? You lost us.
The Swiss are deluded. They trust way too much than what’s warranted
Greece: Trust Noone
Typical France, lol.
Shame that the Netherlands isn’t more pink.
The French trust nobody.
This nicely fits the Brexit vote.
Portugal trusts the EU more than the national government. European integration is seen as a way to make the national government more watched.
blue and red colors should be swap (EU-blue, and red is nearly in lots of national flags even if not all)
Of fucking course France is like that
We’re not even in the EU, but their untrustworthiness is a big political issue. I’m rather surprised we’re not light blue, to be honest.
EU as a Union is very important. But how some things are done. Wow.
But I have to say our German government is even worse. (Edit: -was worse, who knows what is going to happen with the new one)
Well now doesn’t this say a lot about who is perceived to have their shit together. The north-south transition is so damn predictable is makes me smile and depressed at the same time
from experience and things i’ve heard people say this is seems wrong.

Dutch trust in the national government plummeted over the last year and now it’s [below 30%](https://www.trouw.nl/binnenland/het-vertrouwen-in-de-overheid-is-tot-een-dieptepunt-gedaald~b4d9f392/), thanks to Mark Rutte and his antics.
This is definitely correct.
