Emergency alert: Three responds after phone users complain they did not receive test

  1. A good sign that an emergency alert is needed is that I noticed someone asking why they were getting an emergency alert test at all. Turns out banging on about something on the telly, on social media and in the papers for two weeks isn’t enough to ensure the message gets to everyone it needs to get to.

  2. I was in a sizeable Matalan and they made an announcement to prepare us … then I didn’t hear a single phone go off.

  3. I was interested in doing a test of my own. So my phone is able to turn itself on with a set alarm, I have no idea how it does that but it does. The phone is fully turned off. So I wondered if I turned my phone of if the test was able to turn it on, maybe it could use the same thing that my alarm clock does. It did not, so now I know that. But I also thought that they were resending the alert up untill half past to get any stragglers, I assumed it would be sent then. It was not. What does this all mean? I have no idea. Just thought it be interesting to see what would happen.

Plus if anyone here knows howy phone is able to turn on from being fully shut down with my alarm clock, I’d be interested in knowing.

  4. Honestly, I think those who didn’t get it are seen as less important by the government. You can’t afford to alert 100% of people so you choose the most important ones

  5. I was in hospital waiting to go in for minor surgery. I’m on Three and my alert came through a minute early. Then I got another 5 minutes later in English and Welsh (I don’t live in Wales). My wife was with me and she’s on O2 and her alert arrived at 3.45pm!!!!

  6. Neither me or my misses got the ICBM inbound alert.. I’d prefer not to know tbh . We live fairly near a lakenheath airforce base that would likely be in the top ten targets . We are in the instant death circle not the walking irradiated blister circle.

  7. I didn’t get it, I assumed it was because I was messing around setting up a new phone, but being on three makes much more sense.

  8. I used to have Three and lived in London and their signal was hopeless. If I had to rely on Threes connection to keep me safe 😂

  9. On Three, didn’t get it. Outside, phone on all the way through, waiting for it. Partner also on Three, also didn’t get it. Mother-in-law on giffgaff, in the same garden, got the alert fine.

My understanding was that if _any_ cell tower within range was broadcasting the alert, then you should have received the alert. Similar to how you only need *a* signal, not necessarily your own network’s signal, to make an emergency call. But given how the issues seem to have been quite specific to Three (and the MVNOs running on Three’s network), it appears this is, in fact, not the case.

Overall, not a very successful test. I know you test these systems so that you know what doesn’t work, but given how rare the opportunity comes along to do such a large test, you would hope that it’s largely successful. This has been years in the planning.

Definitely a big black mark against Three. I don’t think I’ll be sticking with Three in the future.

  10. I’m on Three had an alert at dead on 3pm but there was no notification saying about it, just a loud alarm noise

  11. I’d missed paying my phone bill with plusnet by a few days so they restricted my services. Didn’t end up getting an alert lol, guess you’re only worth saving if you’re not behind on your payments loool

  12. Three are a terrible network in general. I’m only subbed with them because they’re one of the only networks to offer unlimited data (and at a reasonable price) but damn their network coverage is dog water.

Only reason I’m not using Vodafone, EE or O2 is because I’d be paying at least 2.5 times more for an equivalent SIM only deal.

  13. Thats ok people No Panic !!!!!
Come on It’s just an emergency alarm.
The mid-contract increase that, 3 didnt failed !!!!

  14. It’s about time the gov got their act together properly with the major networks to ensure remote rural areas are properly covered.

Having to walk 100+yds down the lane just to make a mobile call or send/rec a sms is no joke in bad weather or at night, never mind receiving emergency alerts. Internet,… forget it.
If your landline is unavailable you’ve got problems.

  15. Anyone else disappointed by the actual alert itself? There were a couple beeps and that’s it. Especially with how big the time variances were, I wouldn’t be surprised if most people that weren’t actively looking at their phones just straight up missed it

  16. I’m setting that beep as my ringtone now just to fuck with people. “What do you you mean you didn’t get the zombie apocalypse warning?”
