I wonder why people here still seem to like the death penalty compared to other socially liberal countries, is it historic?
Also I find it weird that 36% of people still think divorce isn’t justifiable
Maybe it was the wording of the question but over a third of people really still think you can’t justify it?
> The UK now ranks among the most likely to say suicide is justifiable, along with France (19%), Germany (18%) and Spain (17%).
Err, that’s not a good thing, surely.
Like, what the hell.
I’m surprised that support for the death penalty is as low as 21% to be honest.
I really hope people read the full report because the metrics KCL have used to reach this conclusion are bonkers.
What does “justifiable” mean, seems to be a rather odd question to ask, what is wrong with useing acceptable
~~Transgender and non binary people~~
Let’s not include that even though the UK is treating it’s trans community like total shit.
Holy lord these numbers are lower than I thought they’d be. What does it mean to call homosexuality, divorce, abortion and casual sex “justified” or not?
>Two-thirds (66%) of the British public now say that homosexuality is justifiable – up from 12% in 1981. And much of this change has occurred over a short timeframe: as recently as 2009, only a third (33%) thought homosexuality was justifiable.
The fact that a third of Brits still think that homosexuality is “unjustifiable” is staggering. Think about that the next time that someone tells you that the UK is a bastion of pro-LGBT+ sentiment, 14 years ago 2 in 3 of your neighbours thought that being gay was unjustifiable and even today the number that still have a problem with gay people is 1 in 3.
Also notably missing from this study is British attitudes towards transgender people which are likely considerably worse after the nonstop hate campaign the Tories and the media have been waging against them over the last few years.
Not if you count to geezers queuing up for the Daily Mail outside the Co-Op at 6:59am.
If you ignore trans people, which they obviously did.
Give it a few months with the organized attacks on LGBTQ+ coming from the fucking American christofacists and the tory party embracing it like a long lost brother and that will change all so we dont organise against the rich…
This very selective about questions esked, there’s no look at hidden bigotries (asking them if they agree with homophobic etc statements) or asking the right to life people whether they support abortion when the mother’s life and health are in danger, or fatal feotal abnormalities etc. There’s nothing about antisemitism or other forms of racism (which Diane Abbott would fail, as we found out in today’s Observer). There’s nothing about transphobia. The UK is only among the most social liberal countries *in these cherry-picked categories*
It was only after I left the UK to live in continental Europe that I realised how much more progressive the general UK population is.
it really doesn’t mean anything because as long as homosexuality being “justifiable” is even a debate. There isn’t equality. Imagine if heterosexuality was questioned on the same level as homosexuality. If people were fighting to ban all mention of heterosexuality from schools like with homosexuality.
The word ‘justifiable’ here seems out of place: It implies choice.
Being gay isn’t a choice. You don’t wake up and decide to be attracted to people of the same sex.
Now if someone would just tell our politicians that.
The UK is obviously one of the most liberal country in the world, you must be completely delusional not to recognise it
>”8% of Gen X said suicide was justifiable in 1990”
Surprises me it was this low since most of my Gen X mates were listening to The Smiths, Soundgarden and Radiohead…
I guess at least as many were listening to The Spice Girls, New Kids On The Block and The Lighthouse Family…
This statement doesn’t seem to add up with lived experience lol. Transphobia and xenophobia are rife and I definitely do not feel comfortable with the idea of being out as bisexual. Online, most comment sections on the British sides of social media tend to be full of bigots, too. This study seems fishy.
Notwithstanding that this poll may be flawed for other reasons, it’s always funny to see that the majority of the users on this sub just dismiss studies like this out of hand because it doesn’t fit their subjective world view of Britain racist, bigoted and bad.
A third of the country not believing that homosexuality is justifiable means we’re clearly not socially liberal, unless we’re being compared to backwater hellholes like Saudi Arabia or Florida. Obvious puff piece that didn’t even read their own findings
Absolutely no way are these results truly reflective of the general population. Only 48% think abortion is acceptable and 47% believe euthanasia is justifiable?
They’ve either been worded to trick people or the researcher/s have specifically avoided asking certain demographics.
Unless you smoke a joint in another country because then you’ll use your driving licence in the Uk, 4 weeks later.
Every LBC and Mail reader felt a disturbance in the force when this was posted.
Reality check for the lefties who claim that “yikes sweaty, the UK is like, the most racist country in the world”
