David McWilliams: Ireland could transform itself by implementing one form of soft power

  1. (Can’t read because paywalled but) I imagine this has to do with encouraging more Irish ness in diaspora, and the positives that come with it.

He did a podcast on it recently – it’s a great listen.

  2. McWilliams should really write a self help book at this rate; how does “The Power of Magical Thinking” sound?

  3. McWilliams talks a lot of shite but I think this is a good idea in fairness.

For those that can’t access article – basically, he says we should do what Israel do with the Jewish / Israeli diaspora (bringing them to summer camps in israel from abroad) in Ireland and have tens of thousands of Irish Americans / British / Australians / Canadians etc visiting the Gaeltacht or something of that nature when in college / teenagers and this will help forge business connections when these people are working and make them feel more closely connected to being Irish.

  4. The article is a watered down version of the podcast he had this week. It is an excellent podcast with a brilliant idea (worth listening to on your commute this week).

Is this something our government would ever entertain? He mentions in the podcast that he had put forward a similar idea many years ago, but those in charge lost the point and it became too commercial and far removed from what he envisioned. What was the old project?

  5. This sounds like something the GAA could front. Diaspora kids coming over to go to Cúl camps. Throw in some trad music classes and you’re on to a winner.
