I wonder how much a 4.9% increase in GDP is actually worth when the leprechaun economics are stripped out?
I tried typing that headline into the google news search bar, and rather weirdly, it kept changing my query to “is ireland part of the uk after brexit”
GDP and in particular GDP per capita are a poor comparator of actual economic health.
The UKs is currently distorted by City of London and Ireland’s is subject to similar distortion by our own Irish based MNs booking profits via Ireland.
The IMF projections are an indicator that we in Ireland should be able to whether the further bumps in these economic headwinds.
I will be judging our economic success on the basis of median income and cost of living mitigations over the next couple of years.
The UK has a long way to slide and over the next year or 2 in particular unless a deal is done to allow the continued access if UK to European financial services market?
There could be a step GDP decline as money flows out.
I’m glad that apples patents that are domiciled in Ireland for tax purposes are doing so well.
5% growth in GDP can only be a resignation matter! Modified GNI is the stat that matters for the domestic economy.
FG
They turned Ireland around after 2012
Sinn Fein the only option to over see anything in our country for the next election. If the UK is in such turmoil and investors are leaving who better to have in charge than the most nationalist party on the island makes Ireland a much safer bet not to do something as ridiculous as Brexit. They also have proper ties to the North which is the only part of the UK actually thriving since Brexit a full island is stronger than a split island. I think having FG and FF as opposition would be extremely interesting and a healthy opposition leads to be better governance. The sooner Sinn Fein get into power and reality of the job hits them it will make their party stronger and some of there populist politics will no longer work. And finally being ousted will lead to a stronger FF and FG.
Serious question: what level would our GDP need to be at to be able to afford the housing, healthcare and social care we need?
Meanwhile Ireland laughin at the UK, getting revenge cuz of the 700 or 800 years they caused of pain for us
“Ackshually GDP is not a good blah blah blah..” moaners.
We’re doing great lads! Enjoy it! It won’t always be like this!
Doesn’t matter about gdp if that never translates to a home and health care for all
We don’t have any political party we could trust with this but the absolute worst option would be to keep FF/FG and have them take credit while pissing it all away and not solving the multiple crisis that they insist dont exist.
[Insert GDP caveat here]
Get whoever fixed the online Passport Renewal service and put them in charge of the country.
We all know that equal rights are very important these days.
Perhaps you could try and elect the Tories to ensure economic equality… (Or at least it may do us in England a favour by taking these cnuts away.)
Homelessness is also set to soar
Well it certainly isn’t our current gov as a lot of FDI will be leaving ireland if cost of living isn’t sorted out.
A lot of our GDP is coming from a handful of American companies tax receipts, there was a section on it in the last episode of primetime.
Corporation tax has surpassed VAT now which is a weird thing,
Also the government are nervous of using this money for day to day spending as they are afraid it could just stop coming in if the American tech companies decide to go elsewhere or have a downturn
All because they thought they were better than everyone else. Fucking Morons
Yeah sorry but this is a load of dogshite.
Ireland is not “booming” nor is Britain “whimpering”. Obviously Brexit was a very stupid mistake, but the angsty teenagers on reddit who are adamant it’s going to turn Britain back to the Stone Age meanwhile over here we’ll have streets paved with gold are delusional.
Not only are actual levels of wealth and consumption in Ireland much, much lower than the UK and below the EU average, but they’re also more similar to that of countries such as Spain and Italy than to the UK or US. And I honestly think that’s a much more accurate, if a bit bleak depiction of how we’re really doing in regards to quality of life.
For Christ sake when will the world stop using GDP for Ireland
Quite literally anyone but FF/FG. They have shown time and again a complete lack of ability or will to do anything about the housing situation and as a result, any economic “boom” will come to a spluttering end the moment people try to hire folk and find out that they either have no where to live at the wages they can pay.
Not to be negative but isn’t Ireland’s GDP growth always massively inflated due to us having such a large concentration of large corporation headquarters here?
And the people won’t see one bit of it. Because our government is just as bad as everywhere else.
GDP is not an accurate metric for growth here. Nice to show on a graph, but its not representative of whats happening in the real world.

Fine Gael. None of this coalition nonsense.
Sinn Féin wouldn’t know what to do with it.
Fine Fáil are robbers
Greens are irresponsible
Let the circlejerk commence.

I’d lean towards using median income or purchasing power parity as better direct measures.
Median income is presented strangely in Irish figures, as a household rather than individual total in the CSO data for 2020 [places that at €43915](https://www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/ep/p-silc/surveyonincomeandlivingconditionssilc2020/income/#:~:text=The%20nominal%20median%20household%20disposable,the%20mean%20was%20%E2%82%AC52%2C941.).
Same figure for the UK [albeit 2022 is £34000](https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/personalandhouseholdfinances/incomeandwealth/bulletins/householddisposableincomeandinequality/financialyearending2022#:~:text=Median%20income%20for%20non%2Dretired,FYE%202013%20to%20FYE%202022).) or €37250 which puts Irish median income quite ahead of the UK albeit with higher overall cost of living.

According to this report published by our own central bank: [https://www.centralbank.ie/docs/default-source/publications/economic-letters/vol-2021-no-1-is-ireland-really-the-most-prosperous-country-in-europe.pdf](https://www.centralbank.ie/docs/default-source/publications/economic-letters/vol-2021-no-1-is-ireland-really-the-most-prosperous-country-in-europe.pdf)
