Minimum unit pricing.

  1. Minimum Unit Pricing will mean that a 500ml can of 4.2% stout will cost at least €1.66, a 14% bottle of wine will not be sold for less than €8.28, a bottle of 37.5% sprits will not be sold for less than €20.71, and a bottle of 43% spirits will not be sold for less than €23.75.
    TLDR: 24 cans (500ml) beer (4.3%) = €40.80

  2. Minimum unit pricing is one of those things that won’t really affect me in any significant way, but I still think is fucking stupid.

It seems to come from the “Let’s close the off-licences earlier and that will cut down on people drinking somehow” school of thought.

  3. “most premium brands will see no price change”

They will in my hole. You think a premium brand is going to be happy to be priced similar to the cheaper stuff while turning down an opportunity to increase profit margins while getting to blame it on the government. The whole lot will be going up.

  4. “Households with lower income showed the biggest reductions in alcohol purchases”

Thank god we wouldn’t want the poors enjoying themselves now would we

  5. It’s a bit fucking rich Stephen Donnelly out talking bollox that the free market helped them reduce the price of antigens so they’re not pushing ahead with subsidising them

But when the same free market sell beers, ah no fuck that boys you better charge more for that, can’t be having that

I 100% guarantee this will push up the prices of all beers and wipe out Tesco value vodka and the likes

Plus this is pure balls because we among the most expensive country in the EU at the moment:
The goal of minimum unit pricing is to stop strong alcohol from being sold in supermarkets and shops at very low prices.

  6. You have 10 days to stock up on booze at a sensible price – Tesco is the one! 20 bottles of Heineken for €12, many other great deals at the moment… can I borrow a transit van, anyone?

  7. Honestly someone needs to lockup the clown car puritan movement.

The amount of stupid ‘good for you’ laws these people lobby for. They’re opinions are not representative of the rest of us at all.

Anyone who thinks increasing the minimum price will combat addicts, knows sweet fuck all about addiction.

Addiction comes before everything else, they’ll steal it if they have too.

  8. Jesus this is important news kept quiet. And there’s no doubt it’ll be an excuse for everyone to raise their prices and blame the govt. I don’t drink much beyond the odd one at meetups but thanks for the heads up

  9. It’ll be interesting to see if it works anyway. I’d wager it’ll reduce consumption for some people but alcoholics will still drink as much as always.

  10. I’m so surprised there hasn’t been some sort of concerted public campaign to get this binned, it’s a fucking outrage that they’re enacting this nanny state bollocks.

The only people I know who agree with this those rich enough to not care, or puritanical morons – so where are the parties getting public support on this needed to pass? The Metro line is more popular and they still binned half of it because of people moaning about it.

You can do fuck all recreationally in this country but play sports or drink, now it looks they’re trying to kill off the one of the only two fun things to do on this dingy wet sorry excuse for a fucking rock.

My guess is the only thing this will do is push booze shopping north, and increase in drug usage and addiction and probably as a knock on – suicides too.

  11. I like how they have a section entitled:
“Has it worked in other countries?”

Wouldn’t do any harm to apply the same mindset to other countries that have steered away from prohibition and have seen the copious benefits.

Off topic I know, but it’s just frustrating how much of a nanny state we live in.

  12. > The goal of minimum unit pricing is to stop strong alcohol from being sold in supermarkets and shops at very low prices.

    Who wants this and why?

  13. Absolute smell to FG/FF off this bill. Maybe focus on improving quality of life and people won’t abuse substances

  14. Home brewing, folks. You wouldn’t believe how cheap it is to make beer which would rival the kind of stuff you’d *already* pay €3 a bottle for even without MUP.

Ingredients for 40 pints/cans worth of a very, very nice Citra IPA cost €20 up until the 2021 inflation surge and Brexit, since then it’s been pushed up to maybe €23. An absolute fucking steal. I sincerely hope this becomes a widespread hobby of students and young people up and down the country once this asinine law comes in. Viva la sesh!

  15. Suspiciously I wonder is this more about the increase tax take from VAT on higher prices than anyone’s health?

  16. Please limit my ability to experience escapism from this hole of a country even more, I am so grateful for it.

  17. The cheapest a 24 case of 500ml Guinness can be is €39.84 with the new MUP.
“Minimum Unit Pricing will mean that a 500ml can of 4.2% stout will cost at least €1.66”

  18. “fine gael recognises the importance of the Irish pub for tourism, rural jobs, and as a social outlet. We will support the local pub by banning the practice of below cost selling on alcohol, particularly by large supermarkets”

Right there in the 2011 manifesto. Clear off with your “it’s for health reasons”

  19. If you were a member of a religion that required you to consume alcohol, could you argue the MUP is infringing upon your religious rights?
