The military base where you drive over the runway

  1. Is this sooo special?

In the Buochs-Airport (Nidwalden), which was also a military airport until 2017, you can also cross the runway on a public road, iirc.

And in the military airbase Emmen (Luzern) there is also a public road crossing a part of the runway.

  2. I’ve always loved this military bace! Thank you Tom for covering this topic with all of your expertiseAlso what a lovely ending

  3. When I came to Switzerland and thought this was curious, a friend explained it this way: half the entire country (and their wives) are in the military, and so by some measure, the entire country is a military base. And when you come to understand how many mysterious doors there are in cliff faces, you understand better why the airports don’t have fences.

  4. I remember visiting Meiringen and seeing motorcyclists do drag racing on the runway (it was in a period with no flights planned). I never knew if that was legal but it sure looked fun.
