I would like to pre establish that i know little of the cyprus problem, my uncle was stationed there with the UN, i find the recent news about the threat of Erdogan’s move towards a dictatorship in Turkey concerning for future political tensions in Nicosia. If anyone could please provide an insight into the view of this from a much more informed position i would be very grateful. I am excited for the opportunity she has, in what i have only experienced to be a truly beautiful country, but this has been a recent lingering concern for me, thank you.

The worst-case scenario in this year is the anaxetion of the north and the re-opening of Varosha.
The anaxation probably will not happen cause it will push the last pro Turkey TCs away. So most likely, the full re-opening of Varosha is more likely to happen(if anything).
Is it safe? Yes. Hot temper GCs these days mostly act like they will do something about it, but they won’t. They may go wave greek flags and go home later to play backgammon.
As long as you don’t live in the north and get payed in Turkish Lyra, your gf will be fine.
Nothing will happen. This time Turkey is going for the Aegean and South Western Thrace and even thosere safe for the next 3 years.

The news is concerning for all Cyprus residents (across both communities) but not as a matter of safety (especially in the RoC). The main concern is that annexation means a solution to the Cyprus problem will no longer be viable. Erdogan is already a power hungry dictator looking to revive the Ottoman Empire, and annexation of the North is a real possibility. But I’d like to think that even he is not crazy enough to invade the RoC. He will just become a pariah like Putin or the Iranian regime and I don’t think he wants that.
Safety wise, I’d be more worried about living in the USA and getting shot, or living in the UK and getting stabbed 🙂
Other than the fragile geopolitics of Cyprus, it still remains a safe place. Happy for anyone to debate me on this 🙂
PS: RoC = Republic of Cyprus (as opposed to the North)
Turkey won’t do shit in regard to invading. Relax. It would be geopolitical suicide.
The Republic of Cyprus is in the EU, Turkey will not invade, they will rattle sabres every now and then but Cyprus is pretty safe on that front.
I live in Nicosia, Have considered it many times.
Considering the earthquake has put them in far worse than the already terrible economical situation that they are in, invading a western country is just not going to happen. They did that and took what they wanted to “ensure” the safety of their people. Only thing left for them to do is open Famagusta and cut all ties with Cyprus. As long as Cyprus isn’t touching the natural gas resources there is nothing to worry about.
Geopolitics isn’t the issue, geology is, we will all die with an earthquake soon 🙂
