In my country Bulgaria old liscense plates before 2000 were devalidised since 1 june 2006 and everyone knows that. I found out that in other countries there is not such thing and once registered old plates are valid forever almost everywhere. I started looking for cars for sale and I found a lot of old cars with old plates still in use in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Belgium, France, UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany etc. I also found car pictures in google and youtube videos about the latter. I wanted to do a check on hungary and I started to looking for cars with old pre 1990 small white liscense plates with black numbers and letters. And couldn’t find a thing. They are such a rarity and couldn’t find them even in abandoned cars. Only in pictures and videos of the past. I don’t know where they went. When I look at pictures and videos of 90’s they were everywhere. More recently only on handful of photos. However I fould two cars that seemed in perfect condition and in Use – A [Lada](https://live.staticflickr.com/7583/26918620143_0b68af0f56_b.jpg) and a [Trabant](https://platesmania.com/newforum/uploads/monthly_2019_10/DSC07986.JPG.01707377c3b8d2459eab11ced4c637fa.JPG). My question is: Can you drive with liscense plates like these on your car? If they are no longer in use since when?

No, we have a new system since 1990 and you could use old plates until 1995.
You can read about this [here](https://www.napi.hu/magyar-gazdasag/rendszam-csere.754858.html/amp) (in Hungarian, but you can use any translator to read in English.)
No, two letter-four number license plates could only be used for 1995 december 31.
Old plates are valid until the car is not sold as junk. The government not issuing them any more and at some point everyone is in need a new plate : an accident, stollen or just simple lost – and that point the replacement can be only the new format.
