I’ve been researching my family history for the last 6 months on my own with little to no success. All I have to build on is a pair of surnames, and the location of ‘Poland’ on US census documents.

Would anyone be willing to decipher poorly translated, Americanized surnames? Is there a Polish equivalent to the name Walter? Is there a site that seems to be easier to navigate than the archives?

I currently feel like Charlie Day. Thank you in advance!

It’s a regular thing on this subreddit, just post what you need deciphered and see the hivemind go at it.

Walter itself is of Germanic origin and is in some use as-is. We also have a couple similarly-sounding ones: Waldemar, Witold, Włodzimierz all have similar diminutives (Waldek, Witek, Władek) that could conceivably have been americanized into Walter.
