After Michel exits, enter Marin? Sanna Marin is the right person to preside over the European Council

  1. Eu institutions should not be the way out for politicians that underperformed in their own countries. Im sure that Ms. Marin is a competent and well prepared option, but the optics are that she is fleeing a failure and diminishing the importance of the EU council, as her 2nd option.

We need a new breed of EU careerist that succeed in lower EU positions and then land the promotion to the top jobs.

  2. > Geography also plays into this. Last month, the Estonian prime minister, Kaja Kallas, noted the under-representation of eastern countries in the Brussels top seats. She had in mind the states that joined the union from or since 2004, such as Estonia, and her name is certainly in the mix for a position in the EU or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

    > But no Nordic politician has yet occupied the post of commission or council president. The need to ensure geographical diversity could thus work in Marin’s favour.

Hopefully Kaja Kallas for NATO Secretary General and Sanna Marin for European Council President. A tough man or woman from a CEE state would be a perfect fit for NATO because Russia is the main focus. The time of Afghanistan and Iraq has past

  3. Anyone with more spine than Michel is a more right person than him for the position.

Michel is terrible. He just nods, stands awkwardly and never takes a stand on anything.

  4. She is ambitious, vain, and regards her duties with malice when it is time to party with social media acquaintances including a known drug dealer. No thanks.

  5. The EU council is becoming highly problematic. Its members aren’t elected by anyone, its debates are secret, it has no accountability to anyone, and there’s nothing that citizens or elected officials can do to overrule its decisions. It needs to be turned into a proper senate, with transparent debates, and a democratic system to choose its members.
