In 1938 the Finnish government was still cutting the defence budget. War was unlikely, they said.
Higher defence spending in times of crisis is sound policy.
Good.
I think the budget was already over the nato rule of some min % of GDP before this

Does it include buying 9,4 Billion dollars worth of F-35’s?
This is how US make money by selling weapons.
As an overweight, not so up-to-date res.ltn. I hope we do not need to introduce Finnish *sisu*.
Not sustainable.
“Every country has an army either its own or someone else’s.” We need more hardware and troops to keep east away.
Everything the Finns do to be puppets of the Americans. The Americanization of Finland is inevitable.
Interesting source at the least. Lovely misleading suggestion in the first sentence of the headline. Budget wasn’t raised because of joining NATO, it was raised because of ruZZian invasion to Ukraina.
I highly doubt it has as much to do with joining NATO than with the neighbouring country soon becoming a terrorist state officially, and having bad relations with Finland in the past too with wars and losing land to them.
Well last time things looked a lot like war we continued to decrease defense spending and it has later been widely considered a bad idea. Now that our neighbor seems to once again be on the war path it would be a good idea not do that again. Last time worked out ok in the end but would be nicer if we had more toys.
It’s disingenuous to connect the increase in military spending to jointing NATO, which isn’t surprising from a “news outlet” that is more or less a mouthpiece for Iran.
I mean, are we forgetting the Ruskis? Perfectly logical to invest more in defense when you have an unhinged neighbour like that…
Soon we’ll be able to take back Karelia 🙂
I don’t believe this, because it was said that Finland’s defense costs will decrease if Finland joins NATO.
Well, it’s only natural that the defense spending increases since the Russian unprovoked attack on another European country. That’s nothing to do with Nato.

it’s always best never to pick sides on many wars on earth, what happens when the military spending might go up? maybe then the government tries to increase taxes if they have no other revenue streams to accommodate the high budget, but the people are like we can’t pay the high taxes then you know we have riots in the streets, and unwanted chaos. … On the other side, Russia is happy cause if in the future there is a war, and they happen to fight Finland and win, they have all the right to take the nation for themselves seeing they share a border, but if things were Neutral it would be a safe bet not to be “colonized/controlled” by Russia in the future.
