  1. Sounds like the same sentence as the guy who killed a banker in an unprovoked and undefended attack, so something is amiss.
Pity the mods deleted my q about the banker without explanation

  2. Our criminal justice system and our civil liberties are going down the sewer.

While I don’t think they should be exonerated for being a public nuance, prison should be reserved only for offenders who are a threat to the general public.

Then people who are a great threat to the general public, like Sean Hogg (Scottish rapist) who somehow ended up not being sent behind bars.

  3. In a normal country with a normal judicial system people doing these kind of protests would not be going to prison.

Whether you like the protestors or not bear in mind some people blocking roads went to jail whilst the government’s corruption during the pandemic goes unpunished.

Also the protestors are right – climate breakdown could spell the end of our species and governments across the world and corporations carry on polluting and consuming as if it’s all okay.

  4. “These oil protestors are crazy. It doesn’t matter if we use oil. We’ll survive the climate change caused by the extraction” -The Government… probably…

  5. More than the 36 months that was just given to the man that repeatedly punched and killed (in an unprovoked attack) another man outside the Ivy in London. Ridiculous

  6. Wild comments focusing on rapists instead of just how wild it is we’re jailing protesters at all. As though if rapists were jailed longer then jailing protesters would be okay.

  7. Lots of people on this sub suggesting these protestors should be spared for their crimes because of their “just” cause. They broke the law and should therefore be punished.

Just because you think something’s important does not justify you illegally inconveniencing masses of people.

  8. So if 1000 people protest and block emergency services and people working, they are all equally as culpable as these two? These sentences are truly chilling.

  9. I do think a lot of their protests aren’t the best thought out but surely either way we can all agree that 3 years is insane considering you could run someone over while speeding and on the phone and get less and potentially no actual jail time if you’re lucky.

Next time they protest just do it in cars and copy what taxi drivers do where they do a go slow protest and gridlock the area, like when they blocked Tower Bridge every day during rush hour for a week. Never heard of a protestor getting arrested for doing that despite it also stopping traffic. Could even encourage others to come drive down and join in, 50 people/cars doing a small loop is all it takes to grid lock a key city road if planned right. Just do it on Westminster Square “roundabout”, theres no yellow box juncitons or anything so it’s easy to fill up the roundabout and not leave space for others to get on it. Plus its outside parliament which will make it a pain for the MPs to get out via cars.

Honestly there’s quite a few very distruptive for vehicles things that protestors can do without doing the usual sitting in the middle of the road thing or whatever, or in this case climbing a bridge.

  10. Wildly inappropriate sentencing. The judge wanted to send a message. I’m not sure it was the message they intended to send.

  11. Think they were always going to be ‘made an example of’ so the sentence seems harsh to me. Hopefully they’ll be out in less than 18 months or quicker.

They did cause a lot of disruption and misery, but violent and sexual offenders get less which seems perverse, and we’re all getting robbed blind by the Tories and chums with no recourse…

  12. Tony Hayward being CEO of BP after spilling 210,000,000 Gallons of oil in the Gulf of Mexico: No charge.

  13. Excessive punishment only makes the acts of protest more extreme… If it’s 3 years for protest and 3 years for arson, boy are you in for a wild awakening.

  14. FYI: child porn gets you max five years, out in half so 2.5 years – only a year more than one of these people will serve. Makes absolute sense I’m sure.

I hope everyone who called for these protestors heads are happy the government is using this as an excuse to make protesting illegal. First it starts with locking up people on galleys, next it’s people sitting in roads, then people on marches. But hey you got delayed to work by an hour, so let’s lock them all up!!!

  15. Three years for hanging a banner and forcing people to take diversions for a couple of days. 41% of people get between two and four years for death by dangerous driving.

  16. Not necessarily saying I agree with Just Oil’s methods, but this could be a slippery slope for legislation against protesting no?

  17. You know, protesters might start thinking ‘well, if I’m going to get the same charge as committing arson or murder, perhaps I should make a bigger statement.”

  18. Bit of joke when you consider far more serious crimes are given shitter sentences. For instance the bloke who fucked up a river and SSSI site got given 12 months and will only serve half in jail.

  19. Raping a 13 year old gets you 270 hours community service. inconveniencing motorists and the police in pursuit of climate change action nets 3 you years behind bars.

Colour me shocked. The court system is a joke.
