This will require more bus lanes so they can run on time. This won’t be popular with the motorists.
So they’re adding half a bus, then? How’s that going to work? /s
This is the way.
Not too bad for the beginning.
Does this mean there’ll be 50% more busses, or they’ll stop not showing up 50% of the time
I really hope they pull something good off with the bus system in galway because right now it’s brutal. I spent a good few years commuting in galway by bus and it was a massive pain in the arse. The busses that were scheduled for the most desirable commute times were the most likely to be severely late or simply not show up.
I’m now out of the city, close to a village that is full of commuters (c. 20km from the city) and there’s no bus route that serves us, you’d have to drive 10k to get a bus, and there’s nowhere to park at that.
Now that the bypass is dead it’s all the more important to get something figured out with transport. Might as well try something radical imo: They recently demarcated an area in the city where they’re going to lower the speed limit from 50 to 30, it’s also pretty much the exact area which I think they could just exclude private vehicles, and only allow busses/taxis/deliveries & bicycles etc. Set up some large car parks outside it and see what happens.
maybe improve the current business operations structures, routes, instead of leaving people stranded and waiting for more than 30min thinking if itll ever come 😀
So what’s that? An increase from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes? Still woefully infrequent.
With the state of the traffic in Galway I’ll wait to see if this actually solves anything. If it does yippee
Galway is wildly over-congested. Too many cars in a town small enough to cycle everywhere. It is mental that there is no cycle track at Salthill. Place is a sea of parked cars. Would be a much nicer place if people left the car at home.
Given we’re already having problems getting the extra staff needed for the new BusConnects services in Dublin, how do they expect to get the extra for the other cities?
We were talking about commuting last week and my father (regular bus user) said there is no bus leaving Galway after 6pm serving Dublin, in particular the towns in between. Thought he was mad given the traffic and push for public transport, but I’m just looking here and can’t find one. One express and one that leaves galway at 9pm, goes to Ballina and arrives in Dublin at 5am.
Hugely increasing inner city buses won’t do much for commuters. No wonder traffic is so bad if there is no public transport outside of city centre.
Galway also has a big traffic congestion problems, new roads in and out of the city need to be built.
Is there many bus lanes in Galway for these to run on? Because if the buses are sitting in the same traffic created by cars then they’re not going to persuade people to take the bus.
Great news for the city. Night buses part of this announcement too, so credit where it is due.
Buses are a realistic alternative to cars for most people inside city limits.
Anyone who suggests cycling as a realistic alternative is just living in a fantasy i.e. refusing to accept how insanely wet and windy Galway is 90% of the time.
Great. There’s no bus lanes so that’ll be more busses mired in traffic jams with cars. I used to live in Galway and public transport is guaranteed to be slowest way of getting anywhere.
Also having a train arrive in Galway before 8am would help, the first train doesn’t arrive until 08:35
As a native Galwegian, I’m relieved to hear this. Galway is in dire need of more traffic.
And in other news the pope’s a Catholic.
I wish galway had a park and ride! It’s the closest city to me and I always think it’s mad that nearly all the car parks are right in the city centre, especially with the galway traffic situation!
That’s that traffic problem sorted so……
Now Galway just needs dedicated bus corridors so the buses are actually on time!
As more people can rely on the bus less people will drive, leading to less traffic for those who continue to drive.
Win / win!
Adding more buses is just going to end up with 5 empty buses one right after another stuck in a traffic jam.
