Off topic, but they need to stop describing women as “mum” in the media. Firstly, mum isn’t an Irish description. Secondly, the fact that she has had 3 children is irrelevant because the youngest is 21, hardly in nappies
For some landlords their attitude is that they are doing you a favour by letting you stay there and pay rent. Moment you break any of their rules or appear to ‘take you for a fool’, time to do whatever you want because it’s their house.
The guy was probably thinking about moving back, moment rent issue came up he had his excuse. She explained the daughter would pay rent while she was away, daughter forget. He texted her saying if he doesn’t hear from her he’ll take the house back. Next day he texts again saying she has two weeks to get her shit, he is taking the house back. She was in America and didn’t get the texts. Replies two days later with the owed rent. The lad had already moved in but happy to take her rent too. Then tries to bullshit the RTB.
Garda won’t get involved. They called my friend for accidentally stealing the bin when she left and she thought it was hers.
She didn’t pay her rent for 2 months.
BUT
He didn’t follow proper eviction procedure – and then proceeded onto thuggery.
Also, Gardai only show up when the landlord call.
Oof optics are not good on this one for the government nor the guards.
Housing is so ass backwards. In what other area of life do we pay hundreds and hundreds of euro to a service provider who then treats us like shit and has such a stranglehold over our lives
And we thank the current coalition for this solution. These three political party’s collectively have been in power for just how many years ?, and this is what we have to show for it! If they had any shame which they apparently don’t they would resign and hang there heads in shame !. This is your legacy
But the gardai are not on the landlords side and just keep the peace right ? Funny how they never seem to offer any protection to tenants
Do the garda have any power? My own experiences and others my friends and family have had really make it seem like the garda are more…. set decorations. Like the card board ones they put in shops to stop shoplifting.
> She was told in a formal email that gardaí have “no authority in civil matters or incidents where there is a dispute over property **or alleged damage to a house in circumstances of an owner/tenant relationship**”.
How the fuck is criminal damage outside of gardaí authority?
So she was a good tenant who had paid her rent on time for 5 years, then suddenly missed 2 months rent… and so in the space of 2 days (or possibly 3 days, timeframe isn’t exact) he went from (paraphrasing): “Hi – you appear to not have paid your rent for July and August” to “I’ve illegally entered your home while you’re away, locked your daughter out on the street, thrown lots of your possessions in the shed and kept the rest for myself”.
And then within a few months of that he escalated to: I’ve torched one of your cars and stole (and probably torched) the other
Not only is this some of the most cuntish behavior I’ve ever heard of over a simple clerical error & not seeing a text for two days… but even if she had been in arrears for 2 months (fuck, for 20 months, given the eviction ban) his behavior is out-and-out criminal.
And all that cost him only €20k – which includes costs already incurred by the tenant such as legal fees.
Landlords a total cunt and the more cynical part of me hopes his tenant fights fire with fire. She knows where he lives after all. That house ‘is his pride and joy’…
Who looks after the Dogs when she goes home for the summer ?
The news has been rife with horror stories like this. We’re starting to see a very, very old problem under a new spotlight.
Colin O’Sullivan of Skibbereen is the landlord. Good that they name and shame these sociopaths. He should be jailed.
The national razor hungers

There needs to be an equivalent of The Nuremberg trials if/when all this housing mess is over
This is all the state & RTB’s fault. Most landlords are self employed tradesmen in their 60s/70s who havent read a book since they were 13 when the school master was beating them with a stick because they had dyslexia. These houses are their pension.
These lads don’t understand the legislation. Its constantly changing, and nobody is reaching out to bring them up to speed.
Every evening they turn on the news after coming in out of the pissing rain and you have some lad up in Dublin explaining a different change that they are expected to adhere to.
No surprise they are all selling up. You need a full time secretary and a law degree to rent out a house in Ireland in 2023.
It’s time for james connolly’s dream.
Fuck the Gardai and fuck the government
The Irish rental market is a wild wild west of cowboys as renters we all know it we’ve all experienced these cretinous landlords.
If we had a functional housing market that wasn’t highly dysfunctional.
We could all avoid these landlords and no one would want to rent from them and know one would have the misfortunes of ever engaging with them.
The psychological damage that’s been inflicted on her as a tenant.
Landlords engaging in criminal behavior all the time on 99% of the time they walk off scott-free because it’s a “civil matter”
The law is the law and if someone is breaking it It shouldn’t matter to fucks if they’re landlord and tenant.
I once encouraged my children to apply for the Gardaí. I thought well of them and thought it would be a rewarding job. Now I’m glad they didn’t follow through. A veil has been lifted.
This should be taken with a pinch of salt but stories like this really make me mad and earnest for some Old Testament style justice. Seize the house, burn his car and freeze his assets for two months and put him on the street, sure the summer will be fine for him. It would teach him a lesson and deter other pricks.
Likewise with that cunt with the saw and your man from Luxembourg, bring back the stocks too.
It shows how disfunctional the rental market has become when
A Tenant thinks it’s minor not to bother paying rent for a couple of months and not communicate about it to the landlord. She really didn’t notice the rent not disappearing from her account?
But then the landlord goes nuclear and starts damaging personal belongings of the tenant. Allegedly burning out her car and disappearing another vehicle. Throwing her electrical devices into a shed. Denying her access to get back her belongings
And then the guards say nothing to do with us. Sort it out yourselves.
Seriously lads. The whole rental market is imploding like the fall of Saigon.
I often wonder how it is that renting and property ownership in Europe is so fundamentally different to Ireland, like how is it that European countries seem to get the renting model so socially acceptable but here it’s deemed odd if you don’t own your own place.
Surely if we were a bit more grown up about renting there would be less headbangers like this renting out places
How’s this any different than those mobster fucks.
Think I saw something like this on sopranos. Disgusting
