That’s a shame, I was hoping this will open a precedent for Poland to claim reparations from Sweden for 1655 as we are unlikely to get anything from Germany for WW2!
I am against reparations since modern-day Britons didn’t enslave anyone, but no apology for committing some of the most horrible crimes in human history is a little bit tasteless, to say the least.
What exactly was she expecting to accomplish?
At least recognize the genocides and remove those responsible from honor and make them what they were, tyrants.
The UK has glorified too many genocidal invading tyrants.
As a Frenchman with Portuguese origins, I demand reparations from :
– the Gaul genocide by the Romans
– the conquest of the Iberic peninsula by the Arabs
– a thousands more events by pretty much all of Europe
– WWII by zee Germans
But in short, GIVE ME MONEY or y’all nazis
Apologise 100% and recognise that the British did profit off of it. However we know if we did give reparations it would come straight from taxes of people who weren’t involved as the vast majority of people were not, also a good 20% of the population are not white British with a fair amount of them being from former colonies. Maybe it would be worth coming to some kind of deal that is mutually beneficial and not just the exchange of money if that’s possible? Idk I’m not a politician.
I wonder how much the Spanish will pay for the enslavement and occupation of the lowlands…

Reading the comments makes me realize why Brexit happend and why right wing rethoric is so popular with many in the UK.
From 1500-1800 about a million Europeans were taken as slaves by the North African Berber states. Let’s ask for reparations from them too, only seems fair

Are certain ethnic groups unduly disadvantaged because of slavery? Yes. A proper social safety net could life all people out of poverty no matter their ethnicity though. I’d say, do that.
Didn’t Europe sended trillons of euros to Africa tho? And also get their people to their countries even if they are ilegal inmigrants and a burden to the taxes of natives? When does it stop?
There are countries that have implemented reparations over historical racial grievances and from what I’ve seen these payments tend not to satisfy people but create demand for further rounds of reparations. No one ends up satisfied, and money is siphoned off from public services. When reparations are more specific about something like stolen property, they can be more effective because there’s a tangible end result in mind.
How about a compromise, we’ll apologize the day after turkey apologizes to armenia?
