Hello beautiful people of the Norway,

My wife and me are planning a trip to Norway in June with our two kids (1 and 2 years old). We originally planned on going in 2020 but then lockdowns happend unfortunately. So we have some catching up to do.

I made this round trip intinerary from Bergen. We will be taking the ferry from Denmark and bring our campervan. However, I have absolutely no idea id there are any must see things? When i check pictures of locations on google maps they are all very beautiful. Anyway, long story short some advice from you redditors would be great!

  1. There are no right or wrong answers here, but if I were you I would consider dropping Stavanger and instead go further inland from Eidfjord so you get to experience the mountains dividing Eastern Norway and West Norway. Perhaps Gol-Aurdal-Lærdal if you have the time.

On your way to Lærdal you pass Borgund stave church. There are plenty of stave churches in Norway, but the Borgund one is quite impressive.

That would give you a more diverse experience of how nature in Norway is. And you will spend less time in ferry queues. But it depends on how many days you have on your trip and how far you can drive each day with two babies.

  2. Depending on the number of days, this looks ok. Since you’ve already plotted in eidfjord, I would add a few more Kilometers up the valley and see Vøringsfossen.

When in June? If it is around midsummer, you might experience some really cool events in hardanger.

And; please, for the love of god; the roads are narrow and it is impossible to overtake people. You will not be able to drive as fast as the locals. So pretty please with sugar and a lot of swear words: pull over to the side of the road and let us get passed you!!

  3. Hi All,

It seems I am not able to edit the original text so I’ll do it this way.

We are going from 31 May to 20 June. However, we lose about 5-6 days to get to Bergen. Four days to go from the Netherlands to Hirthals and then the ferry time.

When we didn’t have kids we would do that in one day but we don’t want to make the journey to taxing on them.

This effectively gives us about 17-18 days in Norway. We purposefully did not make a bigger round trip because we don’t want daily drives >4 hours.

  4. If there is any way you can fly from Bergen to Bodo and then drive to Lofoten it is SO worth it. Those islands are just unreal. We went two years and hands down it was the best trip I have ever taken in my life. So much hiking and scenery, and something about the tropical looking arctic beaches there was just surreal. Highly recommend.

Also if any way to detour to Alesund, it was a cute town too!

Other places we loved were Geiranger and all the other fjords around there. A bit touristy but some of the mountain hikes to farms on cliffs were amazing.

  5. When leaving Bergen, do a little detour (adds a bit over one hour to the trip).

Keep north on E39 a little longer, and do a right towards Mo/Modalen, just after Mo you turn right and drive trough a tunnel. After the tunnel you go left trough Eksingedal and end up in Evanger where you get back to your loop by going left on E16 towards Voss.

Another option would be to go right after the tunnel trough Stamnes, and *right* on E16, and then left towards Hamlagrø. This will also lead you to Voss, and the detour would add another hour to your drive to Voss. (total around 3.5 hrs)

  6. You should definitely travel to Geilo from Eidsfjord, then go north towards Hol/Aurland (rv50) back to the fjords and Bergen. Beautiful scenery.

The ferries on E39 will cost you time and money, but for the kids it might be nice to get out of the RV to have som fresh air and svele.

  7. Nice route! Pretty familiar to me as I’m from Askøy. I lived in Bergen and Stavanger, hiked trolltunga in odda
I advice you to make a hike to preikestolen which is close to stavanger bun ton on your map. Mental views!

  8. As a sidenote, you cannot drive Bergen-Stavanger in less than 5 hours. So you would have to stop somewhere in between if you are strict on the less than 4 hours driving part.

For things to do, check out visitnorway and [fjords.com](https://fjords.com), there’s too many options available to list 🙂

With young kids I would see if the Viking museum on Karmøy/Avaldsnes would be interesting. Outdoorsy thing with Viking houses.

  9. I live in Bergen but I’m from the greater Stavanger area and your trip looks absolutely doable! If you want some tips on stuff slightly further south, the RV44 from Bryne to Egersund is very scenic and no longer than 90ish minutes. Slightly further south from that is Sokndal which has super scenic drives and lots of hiking opportunities.

Odda has the infamous Trolltunga but this is a very tough hike I would not recommend with two small children, Pulpit rock is way easier then, and significantly shorter.

Kongeparken is fun for kids but yours might be too young to enjoy it, and it’s quite expensive. Vikinggården at Karmøy is worth a visit, and less hectic than Kongeparken.

Bergen has a lot to offer with kids, I can link to another threat I commented on for that.

  10. In hardanger you can take a detour from Odda or Eidfjord (don’t know what direction you are going) to the west side of the hardanger peninsula, rather than driving along the Sørfjord. Then you can take the kids up to the folgefonn glacier. Not many of them left, and they are all disappearing. It is a short drive from Jondal to the glacier. It is also possible to go skiing on the glacier. The ferry kinsarvik-Utne is free of charge.
