People view it as way more right-wing than the rest of austria already is. Other than that, i observed a meme going on about the people there being incestuous, kind of like the alabama of austria. But i wouldnt say austrians hate burgenland…

I would argue, the reason people mock Burgenland is that historically it was not part of the old Austrian Empire but we got it from Hungary after the first World War, and till to this day Burgenland is an economically underdeveloped Region.

Ich würd vermuten das Burgenland ist wahrscheinlich das ländlichste und damit hinterwäldlerischte Bundesland. Es hat kein natürliches Zentrum da ihm mit Sopron/Ödenburg das natürliche Zentrum abhanden gekommen ist (ähnlich wie das nördliche Waldviertel, das auch eher in Richtung der südböhmischen Städte ausgerichtet war).
Eisenstadt ist wenig mehr als ein großes Dorf, Rust die zweite “Stadt” qualifiziert sich nicht mal fürs Adjektiv groß. Und historisch ists halt Deutschwestungarn und kein eigenständiges gewachsenes Gebiet, sondern eine Randzone die zu Österreich dazugefallen ist.
Das Dorf meiner Großeltern hat vor 100 Jahren oder was gegen eine Zugverbindung gestimmt. Deshalb wurde der Streckenverlauf geändert und ich darf eine extra Stunde im Bus sitzen wenn ich sie besuch
Edit: Hab grad gegoogelt und die Bahn dürfte 1897 entstanden sein. Also bissl mehr als 100 Jahre
I lived in Oberwart for a year during my German degree, and I can see that Südburgenland in particular is *absolutely* the arse end of nowhere (is “JWD” still used?) and it’s not exactly party central.
But I loved it, it’s a beautiful part of the world and while I’m sure my experience would have been different if I hadn’t been a blond, white, Western European, I found the people mostly lovely and a fascinating cultural mix of Austrian, Hungarian and Croat.
The memes are funny though, so have at it…
Burgenland is a myth invented by Geography teachers because 9 Bundesländer is closer to 10 and makes Austria sound more important. If you go there, you will see “Grosswien” which naturally evolves into Slovakia and Hungary
It was the last state to become part of Austria. Some people would rather we got Southern Tyrol back.

Jeder hasst das Burgendland nicht. Ich liebe es. Jedes mal wenn ich mit dem Rad den Hügel runter nach Kobersdorf zum Badesee fahre, stellt sich eine Art Mittelmeer Feeling bei mir ein. Mag daran liegen, dass die Temperaturen gleich 6 Grad mehr ausmachen. Angenehmes Klima, schöne Ortschaften, stressfrei und einladend. Außerdem liebe ich Wein. Wie könnte ich das Burgenland da hassen.

Jetzt aber mal Spaß beiseite. Das Bundesland ist natürlich ein genau so schönes Burgenland wie alle anderen. Es ist nur etwas flacher, was aber nicht schlecht ist, da man auf diese art die Landschaft beim radfahren besser genießen kann. Kulturell hat es gleich 3-fach zu bieten, man darf immerhin nicht auf die Ungarn und Burgenlandkroaten vergessen.

Also, Burgenland was part of Hungary for centuries, becoming part of the Republic of Austria after WW1 because it had a German-speaking majority. However, this different history also means a certain degree of cultural differentiation.
