UBI is needed at this point wages are not really enough for many people. We really need to have a Frank discussion about how future generations will afford things
In many cases Universal Credit is de facto a tax payer subsidy for big corporations that don’t pay people enough.
One thing that could do would be substantial increase of minimum wage, so that many people won’t need UC in the first place.
Those experts should know that will not happen under the Tories though. Under any other party, it could happen and lead to some improvement in the system, however the Tories will continue to use sanctions to punish people. The system will remain a chore to navigate and designed to make it difficult to get the full amount you are entitled to. A sane person knows reform within the benefits system is sorely needed, that also assumes that those directing the reform want to actually help people too.
Universal credit started with two really good ideas: simplify the benefit system, and make sure that works pays.
But then the Conservatives got their hand on it, and they turned it into a mean, technocratic, unhelpful system.
Imagine linking the state pension to inflation but not universal credit though 🤡
At least we’re being frugale and not spunking loads of money parading a parasite through London in a gold carriage….. Oh wait
