Which is a joke, and if it’s not enough to stoke up a real debate about our military spending then all hope is lost on that ever happening
However without our own heavy lift capability they’ll most likely have to beg for a lift home from another country. The exact same thing happened in Afghanistan and its embarrassing that the govt haven’t purchased any heavy lift aircraft since
Whats left out is the reason for only sending a 12 person squad.
Any more than 12 we need to pass the triple lock mechanism for have Irish troops outside the state.
all three criteria must be met below.
A complete yes vote from the UN security council.
A formal decision by the Irish government.
approval by the dail eireann.
How we can rely on this system where we need go through such a long process and get an agreement from country’s who have a say of where are troops go? I dont even need to mention what kind of countries that get a say in it…
No other country in the world even actual neutral countries have this kind of policy regarding there military’s. Its not good enough for irish citizens abroad that they can only rely at best on 12 personnel to get them as the government does not to start such a long egregious process. Even if you want this country to stay neutral in proper sense (fair enough no qualms about it) for goodness sake let us have the capability (which we also very much lack) and make that decision on sending troops outside the state in dail eireann.
Would be nice if we had military transport air craft.
Triple lock has to go, absolute farce we give **other** countries an effective veto over our military deployment.
Jaysus. Sending lads over on a commercial flight to Djibouti and the others over to France to thumb a lift with them is quite frankly embarrassing.
That we can’t even get 12 people over to Sudan under our own power is a complete joke.
Having long-haul heavy lift capacity in some form is such a basic thing for a country to have and we have absolutely nothing of the sort.
> France’s foreign ministry said today a “rapid evacuation operation” had begun, and that European citizens and those from “allied partner countries” would also be assisted, without giving further details.
So the ARM has to use France to get there. We’re not in NATO so not really an “allied partner country” will our citizens be last choice for room on the last plane back if it is full? Seems fair – we’re just free-ligging.….Will Euro citizens from NATO countries get preference?
Ireland is supposed to be a neutral country but sending soldiers on “peace” missions everywhere just like the Brits.
