Pharmaceutical guy here. Botox is so amazingly potent that it can really be tested using normal techniques. Animals are used to test dilutions of botulinum toxin and this give an ‘activity rating’ in units rather than in nanograms. Most Botox is used in cosmetic procedures, which means most of this testing is pointless. The medical uses are non-trivial so that use seems reasonable.
Another scandal – Ireland has the highest percentage of people who were originally born in Ireland. Or any other almost exclusively Irish thing…
At least the animals didn’t look one bit surprised.

Is that because we make basically the world’s supply of botox ?
Of course it does, the world’s supply is practically all manufactured here.
Sexy animals.
That will certainly raise some eyebrows
We seem to be very good at killing animals in this country.
“the real question is why are animals using Botox in the first place”
….. Danny Healy Rae……
LD50 is an absolute requirement for chemicals testing and even more so for pharmaceutical grade chemicals.
It’s unfortunate that we’ve to kill mice to get that information but it pretty much forms the basis of what a safe level of exposure is.
Botox is seen as a frivolous thing used for vanity purposes. It’s a medical product with medical uses.
But on the plus side we have the lowest number of wrinkly dogs and rats
Animal testing of a new drug is still needed as a final hurdle before it can be trialled on humans to test for any teratogenic or mutagenic properties which could affect embryonic development while leaving the host unaffected. The FDA refused to licence thalidomide for use in the US for this very reason. Suck it, Denmark!

Botox does that.
Would you rather they kill people testing it?
