A change from the recent confrontational tone from France.
France: “We have been betrayed and stabbed in the back. The gala is cancelled!”
Also France: “Hey America, why all the acrimony? Can’t we just get along?”
“On China, Le Maire advocated for a pragmatic rather than adversarial approach.”
This is going to be a problem in the relationship then. As AUKUS showed the US, UK, Australia are not going in for half hearted measures or trying to appease China.
France: Let us dump subsidized Chinese steel and aluminum through our market.
US: that would make our tariffs on China pointless. how about we allow the historical amount we trade so that it’ll solve the problem.
France: you’re literally ~~Hitler~~ Trump
US: you’re being unreasonable
France: *something something anglos*
>On China, Le Maire advocated for a pragmatic rather than adversarial approach.
>The American strategy is “to oppose” the rise in power of China, while Europeans want to “engage” Beijing on questions of intellectual property, market access and human rights.
>”I think the only good solution is to exchange as much as possible with our American partners, to look subject by subject what approach we are taking, and to continue to cooperate, to discuss this strategic subject for the 21st century: the rise of China,” he said.
