    >The YouGov survey, carried out just over two weeks before the event, found 51% of adults questioned believe the ceremony should not be taxpayer funded.

    >Almost a third – 32% – said it should, while around 18% did not know.

    >The Westminster Abbey coronation, where the King and Queen Consort are set to be crowned, is expected to cost several million pounds, but with no budget revealed and the government not commenting on the expected total cost, the amount of public funds due to be spent remains unknown.

    >Some unconfirmed predictions suggest Operation Golden Orb could cost between £50m and £100m.

  2. Maybe sausage fingers can pay for it out of the hundreds of millions of pounds he has. The idea we are paying for this bollocks during a cost of living crisis just shows how out of touch and entitled they are.

  3. I’m not sure what’s more impressive – the fact that the King’s coronation could cost up to £100m, or the fact that there’s a recipe for Coronation Quiche

  4. Yeah of course, so many people are struggling right now and yet we’re about to spend 100 million quid of public money to throw a big party for one of the country’s wealthiest men.

  5. The queen was one of the wealthiest people in the world. Apparently Charlie is now even more wealthy.

Fuck him. We don’t need a bloated royal family.

Let the people who slavishly adore this family pay for it and the rest of us get a tax break.

  6. If taxpayers are to subsidise this second rate royal soap opera, why not ‘Coronation Street’ and the like, because they at least have some connections to real life.

  7. The fact is he is the head of state for the country so obviously it should be publicly funded. It’s like saying the inauguration of Trump or Biden shouldn’t be publicly funded because you don’t like them and didn’t vote for them.

  8. It’s a sad state of affairs when I misread “More than half Britons think CORRUPTION shouldn’t be publicly funded” and my immediate thought was “yeah, that’s more than I expected”

  9. Doesn’t Chuck have a huge private fortune?

It’s always the tax payer that gets shafted when these fuckers decide to do something

  10. He could really score some points with the public by paying for it himself, too.

But of course, this shows the entitlement and the contempt he and all royals have the country and its people.

  11. I’m kind of a royal watcher and I’ve always thought it would be better if the duchy of Cornwall merged with the crown estate and the sovereign grant funded all the public/state related part of their roles (which would include the coronation, state visits, state receptions, staff salary etc) and the duchy of Lancaster anything royal work related (like their royal engagements, work for Earth shot, Early Years etc) .

Giving the monarch and the heir business portfolios worth billions which would make them more than 20 million each annually ( that is 20 million Charles gets and 20 million William gets from their respective duchies) on top of an 80 million official budget is surely too much.

  12. The other half are clearly mental.

Tax-payers funding a massive event where someone born into luxury rides about in a golden carriage in clothes worth more than most will make in a year whilst those same tax-payers are dying from not being able to heat their homes/buy enough food.

  13. Whether we’re a republic or not, there’s no such thing as a free head of state. A lot of people seem to forget we’d be paying for inauguration ceremonies on a 4-7 year cycle if we weren’t paying for an infrequent coronation. There are lots of reasons to criticise a monarchy but for me this isn’t it.

  14. This country screws over disabled people, can’t afford raises for hard working people, can’t afford £20 a week for UC and is cutting benefits; Charles can pay his own way. Grifters. Absolute grifters. Get a job Kate

  15. Unfortunately I don’t think how this specific money is used makes a difference to your average Briton. If the coronation wasn’t publically funded what else would The tories do with that money? Waste it, pocket it for themselves, or give it away to their mates, donors, pub landlords etc.

  16. I mean if you are going to have a king (which I don’t agree with), having a publicly funded coronation seems like the logical extension of this. Also what is funded in this. Obviously security (the lion’s share of the costs) always has to be borne by the government. Cutting back on pomp and ceremony saves little and is a bit pointless. If you are going to have a monarchy, you may as well put on a show.

  17. More than half, otherwise known as a majority.

A majority of Britions think this inbred relic can fund his own coronation

  18. I see no reason why we shouldn’t have an opt out on funding the royal family. If they are so sure of their support they would be in favour of it.

What percentage of tax payers do we think would opt in to finding them?

  19. I want to scream. Of course its not right! Every normal person in this country is struggling to make ends meet every month, while predatory businesses rake in our money because they can. Meanwhile we have our faces rubbed in this farcical coronation every 5 minutes. Its a disgrace.

  20. Well yes. He’s a billionaire who rakes in obscene amounts every year.

He shouldn’t get any public funding at all. Ever.

If anything, his title should be conditional on handing 99% of that income over.

  21. Let’s put it into perspective.

Millions upon millions of money taken from us by people who are richer than us, to pay for someone to put a fucking hat on.

That’s all it is. He’s already king. The hat’s already his. All we’re doing here is putting the hat on his head. And spending a shit ton of money for the craic.

Plus he’s never going to wear the thing again after…
