Price of electricity these days? You bet your newly toasted sandwich there’s a charge
Yes
I think it’s a recent thing because of high electricity costs
They’ll be charging for the wrapper next
It’s an electric toaster, there has to be a charge or it wouldn’t work ⚡
50 cent to toast a sandwich in the shop by me..soon I’ll be charged for walking in the door
I remember one time in 2015…there was a place… On the Quays.. That did a beautiful chicken fillet roll for

I imagine it would be. It’s extra use of power and extra work for staff. Seems like a thing that would cost a bit extra.
The local centra to me has now started charging €6 for the €5 pizzas if you want them cooked… And yeah a toasted sandwich is €0.50 more than an untoasted one.
They’d probably charge extra if they knew you were going to use them as knob warmers.
Fucking liberty
There are two different tax rates for selling cold food and hot food. That’s the main reason.
Askin’ for a toasted toastie?
That’s a ~~paddlin’~~ chargin’

It’s worse than 2006
No such thing as a free launch .
Well VAT is 0% for cold foods but standard rate for hot foods that’s probably why
If they toast it, VAT is applied. No VAT on a sandwich
I once asked the deli counter to put some butter on a 70c scone years ago, and they slapped a e3.50 sticker on it. I queried that and they said it was now a ‘deli item’ so I said I would leave it. The deli guy chased me out to the street asking what he was meant to do with it now, and I suggested that he try to sell it.

That’s the fucking road we are heading
Subway have been doing this for years, but didn’t tell you there was a charge; they just ask if you want it toasted then add it on
What the fuck?! That’s ridiculous
Always has been
This is a VAT thing , Revenue insists a hot sandwich is taxable and cold not , insane ,
Pretty sure you have to add some kind of tax if the food is warmed
I know that Eurospar in Baltinglass and its a rip off, this 70 cents toasting charge just puts the cherry on top. In fact in Baltinglass they only have that Eurospar and a Supervalue which is also a rip off. To get to a different supermarket the residents of Baltinglass have to drive either 25km south to Carlow town or 25km north to Blessington.
The locals got so tired of being gouged for their food shopping that they went and set up a social media campaign targetting Lidl or Aldi to get them to build a supermarket and provide competition to the duopoly of Eurospar and Supervalue. The group grew to over 1,200 members asking one of the German discounters to set up. Lidl were impressed so they identified a site, bought it and the planning permission for the new supermarket is going through at the moment with construction due to start later this year. It was a great win for the locals and now they’ll be able to avoid being ripped off on their normal food shop
Energy prices are up, so I get that businesses need to cover their costs. Not sure about what toaster they used or for how long they used it for, but if you had a 3KW toaster (double domestic power) on for 1 minute with a 1KWh unit rate at 0.50c (more expensive than my unit rate of 0.48 before discounts)… This would cost 2.5c in electricity (3/0.5 = €1.50/hr to run. 150/60(min) = 2.5c).
So unless their toaster is 84KW, of their unit rate is 14 euro, charging 70c for toasting a fucking sandwich is just this shop profiteering off higher energy prices and amplifying the cost 28x to improve their bottom line. If they need to increase the product cost (e.g. because VAT on hot food), then just increase the price of the actual product instead of adding these BS charges to trick customers into paying more – that’s what bothers me about this.
You I worked in a deli for a while you’re ment to charge for toasting I never did unless the customer was a dick

Making the sandwich at home is even cheaper.
There’s a charge for it there, yeah.
