Defence Forces ‘needs at least 4,000 more personnel to be able to operate effectively’

  1. No point in having an army and why we spend so much money on it is beyond me.

We are an island nation so airplanes and boats to patrol our waters is what’s needed.

  2. “Effectively” is defined as? The expert group who drew up the report for the Commission on the DF said of the current level of ambition regarding DF:

LOA 1 involves striving to maintain current capabilities of the Defence Forces with appropriate replacement and routine modernisation of equipment and infrastructure. It involves continuing the commitment to a Defence Forces’ establishment of at least 13,5691. Some reforms and restructuring of the Defence Forces could be implemented within the resource limitations but the core capabilities will not keep pace with the increasingly challenging security environment, the diversification and broadening of threats and the growing complexity of the modern operating environment.

In the Commission’s view, this LOA would:

    • Not be consistent with the more ambitious statements of defence policy contained in the White Paper 2015;

    • Leave the Defence Forces unable to conduct a meaningful defence of the State against a sustained act of aggression from a conventional military force; and

    • Be likely to require a reduced commitment to international peace support, crisis management and humanitarian operations due to capacity constraints.

In short, “effectively” means to return to inadequacy.

  3. Effectively to do what exactly?

Why do we need an army with over 7000 members? Realistically they could do nothing in the practically non-existent chance we were invaded whether we have 7000 or 700.

If anything we should be taking some of them out of the army and putting them into the navy and airforce. They would at least be useful then.

  4. The age limits are too restrictive.

As someone who works in the Merchant Navy as an Officer and who graduated top of his class and college I can’t even join through direct entry.

I’d happily serve my country in the Navy who are crying out for people but I’m considered too old at 36.

For general enlistment the age limits are far too restrictive as well. Your essentially turning away mentally mature people with plenty of life experience who are more than capable of doing the job required.

Look at other Nations like New Zealand so long as you pass the fitness test and medical are fit to do the job your more than welcome in the military.

As a nation our defence forces are living in the stone age with both equipment and mentality, the only real cutting edge is the Ranger Wing.

  5. Maybe stop paying them shit salaries and loosen the requirements for tattoos. Imagine thinking soldiers look unprofessional because they have neck tattoos.

  6. Who would want to join after that abhorrent report came out about the abuse women and even men get from the higher ups. Its not a functioning Army, just a institution to abuse young people trying to make a career for themselves. The Officer Corps needs gutting and reform.

  7. Had a chat with someone I know about this yesterday. Where the actual fuck is the tax money going? Income tax is huge, we have a higher than normal VAT, motor tax apparently doesn’t pay for the roads, they keep closing Garda stations and underfunding them etc. Like where does the money go because it’s not big expenditures like the military either?
