I find this proposal really horrifying. It’s scary that we may soon be at a point where teachers are forced to out children to their parents.
Not only should this be a choice which is up to the student, but outing them to their parents could lead to abuse and attempts at conversion therapy. Saying that it should be reported to parents as a ‘safeguarding concern’ ignores the fact that the very act of reporting it could lead to safeguarding issues.
As a gay person who was closeted at home due to having parents who ‘didn’t believe in it’, school was the only place I could begin to be myself.
We wouldn’t force teachers to out students questioning their sexuality; we shouldn’t force them to out students questioning their gender.
If your kid is trans and they **need** (not “feels a need”, not “really wants to”, but has an actual necessity to their wellbeing) to keep it hidden from you as a parent…you’re a child abuser.
This is forcing teachers to put children into abusive situations.

Can anyone who supports the forced outing of trans children please tell me what the real, tangible benefits are, to the child, for this? Not to the parents’ egos, not for the curtain-twitchers or angry terfs, how does this actually benefit a kid that is trans and didn’t want to tell their parents?
All it seems like it will do is teach children that adults cannot be trusted.
Who’s up for taking a bet that the LGB Alliance aren’t standing up for the vulnerable LGBT kids who will inevitably end up being abused or even killed as a result of this?
0.2% of the population identifys as Trans according to the latest census.
So what would that be.. 2 children in 500?
And how many of those would have rabid anti trans parents? Probably not a lot
Just trying to work out the scale of the “problem” that the Tories are rabbiting on about
Or maybe they are just manufacturing a problem to distract people from our failing economy, that would be a shocker!
How in the ever loving fuck have we reached this point where trans people are the prime culture war scapegoat? Is this just the raw desire for pricks to find a group of marginalised people to pour all their virulent hatred towards?
Honestly, I’m disgusted.
This will cause a spike in domestic violence and youth homelessness. Outing children and teenagers is very dangerous and there’s decades of stats and studies on this the government is ignoring
> LGBT young people are disproportionately represented in the young homeless population. As many as 24% of young homeless people are LGBT
>69% of homeless LGBT young people had experienced violence, abuse or rejection from the family home
>77% state that their LGBT identity was a causal factor in them becoming homeless
As a teacher, this proposal is something I’ll simply ignore, because I take safeguarding seriously. I know what many of the parents of my students are like – disclosing something like this without the students’ explicit permission would put them in danger.
I’d like my classroom, and the school more broadly, to be a safe place where they can be themselves.
As a genetic man / transsexual woman myself, I went to school through the 80’s and 90’s, if this policy had of come in back then, I know I’d of been better off unalived & probably ended up that way.
I got off lightly because people thought I was a little bit gay, but I pretty much had to fight on a daily bases at times, so I can only imagine what it’s going to be like for the youth of today with the current rising hatred in society.
I would never want to be young again, at least being older ya not have to care the same.
My DM is always open for anyone that ever needs someone to talk to in confidence.
