Hi,
We’ve been living in Oslo area in rented apartments for a while and figured out a several pitfalls such as:
1. notification period is usually 3 months, but ads usually appears on finn.no a months before the due date, so you have to decide to move and then only two months after you will have several weeks to find what suits you
2. August and September are definitely not the best time to look for apartments because of students.
So, we are thinking about moving. If we send a notification to the landlord now, we will move on 1st of August. Is July a good time to look for an apartment to rent? I think everybody will be on vacation, but how much it will affect number of ads on [finn.no](https://finn.no)?
May be waiting for a couple of months and moving on 1st of October will be better idea? But how much is it important?
Some other tips on searching for apartment to rent will be appreciated!

No, July is a very bad month to find something in Oslo. This is the month when you find out if you get into the studies you applied for. Many therefore already rent in July. I would assume that the best period to rent is from November until May/June, especially if you are going to live in a place where there are many students. You can of course find something good in July too, but you have to expect that the competition is much greater at this time of year.
We are moving in July, and started looking at the beginning of this month. Within a week of searching we had a whole list of places to look at, and ended up making a choice over Easter weekend.
My recommendation is to not go searching on Finn, but rather to put your own ad up stating who you are, what you are searching for, and where. This has been incredibly successful for us, as each time we have found much better unlisted apartments than those that had been listed. It does cost to make the ad, but it is very worth it.
If you are planning on moving in August, start looking ASAP. Waiting is too late. Most places will understand a delay and you can negotiate based on that.
