We are one step away from Javid appearing on screen with the infinity gauntlet, snapping his fingers and saying it’s the only way to protect the NHS

Ok but when we do take the measures, what next? Wait in lockdown next half a year (at the very least) until omicron vaccine is developed and distributed? Omicron isn’t going anywhere, so don’t see what else would the plan be. By then, some next variant arrives. Do we again lockdown and keep this cycle going? If vaccines aren’t our way out if this, what is?

I’ll be honest, I hate the current government as much as the next person, but I am really fucking glad I don’t have to make these decisions.
Basically a toss up between imposing serious economic harm but potentially preventing mass deaths (if Omicron turns out to create high percentage of hospitalisation) vs not locking down and ending up swamping the NHS if it does turn out to be serious.
All based on limited evidence and where 0.5% difference in guesstimated metrics like ifr and vaccine evasion can make a massive difference

So when is most likely for the inevitable lockdown 4 to be imposed? Before Christmas, immediately after Christmas or after New Year?
The important word here is ‘leak’. If this has been leaked then it is the usual tactic of letting us all know the bad news prior to more restrictions being announced.
I think they’ve already decided to cancel Christmas and they’re trying to dress it up as best they can.
Painfully obvious that they’re doing this not out of genuine concern towards Omicron’s rapid spread, but rather to punish us for calling them out. I can almost guarantee that if there were no Christmas party scandal we’d still be out clubbing and attending large scale football matches without the need for any vaccine passports.
But if you’ve already been exposed for blatant corruption, may as well go full despot…
Would be so much easier to justify crushing the inevitable protests if you have lockdown restrictions in place, am I right?
I hope this move leads to the Tories getting fucking annihilated in the polls. I really do. Especially after Boris promised no more lockdowns.
Omicron is a blessing and these idiots wanna lockdown?
I really don’t know if I can cope if Christmas plans are called off this year. Ive done everything I need to do for 18 months and I really don’t want to end up spending Christmas alone.
Surely it is just not feasible to go back into a stringent lockdown until an Omicron specific vaccine is rolled out. Not to mention it’s going to be near impossible to persuade the public to adhere to restrictions now it’s been revealed the government essentially haven’t followed a single one of their own rules this entire time (Barnard Castle, Matt Hancock, Downing Street parties etc). Near total compliance would be needed to halt the spread of a strain as transmissible as Omicron and the public simply will not be willing to cooperate with a government that clearly has not intention of abiding by any restrictions it intends to impose.
Would the optimal course of action not be to ask those at higher risk of serious illness from Omicron infection to observe a more cautious lifestyle until an Omicron specific vaccine can be delivered? Allow the low risk, healthy population to carry on as normal, enjoying the protection from severe illness provided by 2 vaccine doses (to be topped up to 3 by end of January) and build up Omicron specific immunity to protect the more vulnerable. It is known that 3 doses of vaccine provide 75% protection against developing any Omicron symptoms at all, so the now significantly advanced booster campaign, which has already delivered over 22 million third doses, has the potential to blunt the effects of an Omicron onslaught.
We simply cannot go through the economic, mental and social devastation of a lockdown all over again in the face of a strain that poses miniscule risk to the overwhelming majority of people.
This is our ‘Reichstag Fire” moment. Zero deaths and mild symptoms, yet this so called variant is being used as an excuse to introduce totalitarian measures. The tipping point is right now, and there will be no going back. Please wake up everyone!
I look forward to being mocked by our current government in 6 months for following these measures
Unfortunately the virus is here to stay. So we need to plan to live with it.
To save the strain on the NHS I think separate COVID hospitals will need to be built, just specifically for COVID,specialised units.
Got COVID?? Ok,go the this unit. It’s geared only for COVID,got all the ventilators, trained staff and doctors.
Just my take on it,but we can’t only live for 8 months a year and hibernate over winter for 4 when the yearly spike occurs….
I’m not prepared to follow any more stringent measures unless the government get serious about vaccination and enforcement. The problem here isn’t that I’m still going to work, it’s that X percent of people have chosen not to get vaccinated and to make things worse. The problem here isn’t that I visit my family once a week it’s that arseholes won’t wear a mask on public transport.
I won’t suffer ever bigger inconveniences that won’t help just because bojo the clown is too scared of offending arseholes to call them arseholes. Sorry.
