  1. Stoofvlees met frietjes en groenten (to be honest the veggies don’t need to be there lol) I’d be happy with just the stoofvlees and the fries 😂

  2. That’s a quite shitty looking Stoofvlees, van een zakske, with dried out, frozen fries and some vegetables.

But a good stoofvlees is totally worth it though and our real Belgian fries too!

  3. classic belgium food: focus on the fries and stew. veggies from the frigo/a can to please your mother

  4. If I’m not mistaken those are the ´Carbonnades flamandes’ from a restaurant called Schieve Lavabo in Brussels (there are a few). They are quite okay for the price if you want to try ! (although not the best as others pointed out)

  5. If you look at the detail you can see that the leaf in the bowl is actually not a bay leaf. It looks like a leaf from a “goudbes”. This confuses me.

  6. It is heresy, if you are eating stoofvlees, you always eat it with a witloof salad. That combines the best with the stoofvlees flavour

  7. Mooi gepresenteerd. Met het stoofvlees apart in een potje worden de frieten niet wak. Groentjes zijn randversiering. Waarschijnlijk niet in een frituur want daar verwacht je toch een stevigere portie en zonder de randversiering..

  8. Des carbonnades flamandes, avec des frites et des légumes 😋 My grandma was great at preparing them.

  9. There are many variations but it’s a beef stew. Usually the beef is seared lightly before going into the stew with onions. As for liquid it’s usually a dark Belgian beer thickened with bread and mustard. The types of bread and mustard or beer vary from region to region, household to household.

Stew times can take anywhere from 4 up to 24 hours or more depending on technique and time available, but as any stew: the longer in a low heat the better.

There is a sweeter kind where they use syrup from liege, which is a pear and apple syrup. You can also go for more peppery flavor which I personally prefer.

Usual spices in here are pepper, salt, bay leaf and thyme. Less usually but recommended is cloves, cinnamon sticks and even a slapsh of nutmeg depending on the season.

In winter usually served with steamed or stirfried veggies like carrots, string beans and cauliflower. In summer with a raw chicory salad with usually a honey like vinaigrette .

Always to be served with real Belgian fries and real (not sweet like in the states) mayonnaise. Use the beer you used as the pairing drink or go for a hearty mead or red wine.

Other Belgian dishes to look out for: vol au vent, filet americain, “waterzooi”, mussels and fries, “ballet met krieken”, and of course don’t forget the beers and chocolate. Enjoy!

  10. You need 3 times the amount of what’s in that bowl to reach satisfaction. Also those are frozen fries for sure, find some nice Belgian who’s gonna cook it for you, it’s ten times better.
