What needs to happen for the Irish to do something similar?

  1. I think Irish people have a snobbery around certain jobs which lead them to think striking is lazy. In school, parents and teachers were pushing very hard for the “smart” students to go into tech/business/law, and anyone that wanted to do something more practical like a trade or beautician etc tended to be labelled with a “unless you’re in a fancy office with a degree you’re a waste of time”. The reality is that society doesn’t function without cleaners, min wage workers, tradespeople, and I think Ireland needs to learn that lesson so that “blue collar” workers are not looked down on and that people recognise the value of manual labour and support them when they strike.

  2. But but we are the fighting Irish….we don’t take shit…didn’t we not get the water tax abolished? But But….the IRA and all….no?

  3. The real question is why would the Irish want to do this?

Like it or not, vast segments of the population are perfectly happy with the way things are.

  4. Some people wanting to take builders away from building houses so they can build a wall in the middle of the M50?

Will you make the Mexicans pay for it too?

  5. Why would we build walls across roads? If people want to protest about something the water protests showed the way.

  6. Blocking the motorway just punishes the average citizen and makes things harder for emergency services.

So maybe brick something else up like the Dail ?

  7. This sub when environmentalists block the road: **Bloody crusties – burn them! / The’re ruining the cause for climate activism.**

This sub when the French are doing this: ***Why aren’t we Irish more like that. / That’ll show the gubbernment!***

  8. First we’d need to be a bunch of locals protesting the planned route of a new road called the A69 by blocking a local road in their community. Then we’d need to get onto Iranian television, which is what’s happening here. 🙄

  9. The actual context of this is that it’s a local protest along the route of a planned motorway, the A69, in between Toulouse & Castres. Locals are concerned about the economical and ecological costs of the project. The wall was built on an arterial road, not on an actual motorway.

  10. Every single post involving whatever the french are protesting against today always gets cross posted here with the same shitty title. Come off it already, they’re pissed that a motorway is being built.

  11. Ok I know this has been up a while, but people (possibly including OP) are completely misunderstanding this protest. This is not linked to pensions reform – it is a protest against the new A69 road.
