HS2 confirms that work on the Euston Tunnel is to be paused | New Civil Engineer

  1. The whole short termism of government enrages me. If it can’t look good in <5 years let’s just get rid of it at the slightest sign of trouble. Spend probably more then 50% of the cash but deliver no benefit at all.

HS2 is going to end up slower and less convenient than the WCML, which is basically 180 years old. As a result people won’t use HS2, those against it will say ‘look, its terrible’, it’ll become a political black mark and no-one will ever invest in rail again.

Probably better off turning it into a mega freight line.

  2. That land in Euston is worth far, far more to developers as housing and offices than as a railway station. You can bet that along with a few backhanders delay now is cancellation tomorrow. HS2 will terminate at Old Oak Common and Euston will get some sparkly new property development for investors.

  3. Pretty stupid to not finish this end of the line, like it’s not even gonna get to central London now? Whats the point. All the claims about how fast it will be from Birmingham or where ever to London is now BS because they’ll be countain the Acton station as London, they’ll ignore that to get to central London people will literally have to swap trains and then have another 20 min journey.

Already the most expensive rail line on the planet per mile isn’t it? Stuff like this is just making it go up and up. Even after all the previous price increases back when the full line was still gonna be built I thought it was too messed up to be worth it, like back when it was projected to cost £110bn. But now with all this stupid stuff now which will push the price up even more it’s even worse. Should have just got on with it right away.

It’s frustrating seeing other countries building high speed rail for much much cheaper than us per mile, not even just China but many EU countries too. There’s no reason why we should be paying signifigantly higher per mile and take signifigantly longer to build it. We have access to the same tools and people are people so it’s just policy and regulations that stop it, maybe ours are too extreme because I don’t oftenly hear of high speed rail crashes abroad, not more often per country than I hear about rail incidents here.

  4. That will definitely reduce the cost. There’s no way starting again in 10-15 years will make it more expensive.

  5. My dad works on the railway for a private company and has worked on HS2 every now and then. He told me a couple of weeks ago that they had let go of all the staff for this job.

    HS2 is a complete clusterfuck.

  6. Calm down, this is just a delay. The line won’t be left without an end in London.

However they are probably considering alternatives to Euston such as converting hs2 into crossrail 2, so no terminus at Euston.

  7. Transport secretary Mark Harper today on a select committee admitted it wouldn’t save money delaying the tunnel, but would instead help the yearly budget remain on track

Cooking the books basically, the Tory way. Running this country into the ground

  8. Tories should have completed this instead of doing austerity. They could have borrowed all the money at 0% interest rates. They still would have fucked it up of course.

  9. Unwanted waste of money. Why don’t they realise this?
They could have fixed most of the rail network for the same price.
