Highway Code changes aimed at protecting cyclists to become law next month

  1. I think the update to the rules is good, but I feel it’s missed a trick to enforce mandatory standardised lighting and safety equipment for cyclists.

A hi-biz jacket does not mean you show up during low light, it’s really hard to see in blind spot a cyclist there.

When I cycle I make sure I’m like a Christmas tree and visible.

  2. This is a change to the Highway Code, which is at best a guide, rather than an actual change to any law that can be enforced.

  3. Honestly cyclists need mandatory license plates. I’m glad they’re being treated better on the road, but they need to be held more accountable for road traffic hazards, too.

  4. Pain in the arse cyclists are, sometimes go 3 or 4 side by side causing huge traffic jams. People then get erratic and try to overtake nearly causing crashes!

  5. Actual infrastructure saves cyclists likes and reduces traffic, not this half assed crap. You could look at countries that actually have cycling experience.

  6. Not sure why some people are pretending this is controversial. Common sense says that you take care around more vulnerable road users while operating a vehicle that could easily do them a great deal of harm. That’s already how everyone drives… right?

  7. Are cyclists legally obliged to cycle on the left of the left hand lane amd not in the middle or in pairs blocking the whole lane? What insurance are theyvlegally obliged to have for the road? For example, if a cyclists fails to stop behind a car and smashes into the back of it, what liability do they have? Absolutely fucking sick to death of this war on motorists. They want us back in the offices? Fuck that thanks. Far too miserable driving there I’ll work from home.

  8. Now lets finally get the pavement parking laws changed. It’s taking ages. It’s like a year since the consultation with zero update or info

  9. I find it odd that horses are allowed on roads in the first place.
Big, strong animals that are scared of cars (if Facebook groups are anything to go by)…and people take them to where lots of cars are going to be.

The fact that they now need special rules to get them to apply common sense, speaks volumes.

  10. Roads weren’t built for cars…. Except motorways obviously but cyclists aren’t permitted there… Roads were built for horse drawn traffic and cyclists.

  11. Tbh as a cyclist there should be some enforcement around cyclist such as compulsory wearing of helmets . the bike must road be worthy, and a working bell or horn must be fitted . Hi vis clothing and lights after dark. Use the cycle lane it’s there for your safety above all pedestrian safety is paramount . . I know I am going to get slated for this but I do not see why all road users should not take responsibility including cyclist

  12. Can we make sure if cyclists want to ride on the road then they do so. Not this hybrid approach where they walk onto the pavement at a red light and join the pedestrian flow because it’s convenient for them.

    Edit:
I realised I’d triggered someone and they retracted their comment…. Basically what I’m saying is: if you’re a cyclist on the road, respect the Highway Code – don’t jump off your bike at a red light – which is extremely dangerous – and start walking to the pavement because you can’t be bothered to wait for 30 seconds like the rest of the vehicles.
