Sidenote: it is not clear why it has been described I think?
I have diazepam in my medicine cabinet, as it was described to me in between surgeries so my body could rest.
That being said, a whole box for 5 days is … excessive.
My experience is that these things get prescribed waaay too easily in this country. I had sleep issues as a kid (14yr old), so my doctor gave me hardcore antidepressants that had the side effect of knocking you out. I was a zombie during most of my puberty, but at least I “slept ok” right? It couldn’t be the fact that I had to pendel >4hr every day to school and deal with homework ’till midnight because of that, right?
One of my best friends was dealing with depression. His psychiatrist gave him benzos but didn’t follow up on his usage. He would overdose and combine it with alcohol frequently, had to drag him to the hospital / play psychologist so much that I just gave up after a while.
I have my own shit to deal with, I do not have the time nor energy to be a stand-in caretaker because this country’s welfare-guild is arbitrarily keeping its personnel way too low.
And then people are surprised why our suicide rates are as high as they are. It’s tragic.
At least it seems to be mostly an older generation issue, most likely also older doctors prescribing it.
My dad was seriously ill about 10 years ago, some rare neurological disease that affected his muscles. He couldn’t sleep because of it and got depressed as well. The neurologist prescribed him some very strong anti-depressants which also helped him sleep and relax his muscles. The medicine did wonders and eventually helped (among other things) with curing him.
However he was seriously addicted to the medicine afterwards. The dumbass general practitioner (huisdokter) he was seeing at the time kept prescribing him the drugs without hesitation or questions asked for years. My dad didn’t need the drugs at all anymore except for being addicted to it. Luckily he eventually realised the problem himself, quit with the drugs and went to another general practitioner.

Main problem are the doctors just randomly prescribing these things to anyone without really listening to the problem at hand. I got lucky with a smart doctor, who prescribed me Xanax only to use when really needed for anxiety (2-4 times a month) so I never start tolerating it or become addicted. Furthermore, he prescribed psychotherapy. With that, it perfectly helped my problem while being a long term solution.
However, if he would have prescribed benzos for 2-3 months in a row every day, that’s enough to fuck someone up and make them very dependent on the stuff.
Note: like alcohol, if you use it once in a while, you won’t get addicted and you can feel the effects after a small dose. However, if you use it extensively every day, you’ll start tolerating it and become vulnerable to addiction and long term negative effects.
I have bipolar type II and have sleep problems. I’d like to believe I can go without it, but I think it is naive to say that I would succeed. I sleep significantly bettter now.
It doesn’t surprise me one bit. Our current prescription landscape is being dominated by pharmaceutical companies. These companies have a vested interest in making sure that doctors keep on subscribing these drugs because in the end, it’s the taxpayer that covers a lot of the cost. Yes, those drugs are cheap in the pharmacy, but only because it’s being heavily subsidized by the government.
I used to get some of these hardcore addictive drugs prescribed. I was a zombie. Then somebody pointed me towards cannabis. Yes, it’s illegal, but the scientific evidence nowadays is pretty clear on the matter. Withdrawal from the prescription drugs was not pleasant, but I got through it. Now, I can say that I’m feeling much better than before. Anxiety and sleeplessness are a thing of the past. I’m no longer a zombie in the morning. The only thing I now do is roll a cigarette with 400mg of cannabis combined with some smokeable herbs and take a walk with the dog in the evening. I don’t feel the urge to light one up during the day, and I can stop anytime I want. I still quit for a week from time to time to make sure I’m not getting dependent.
I never smoke and drive, I’m extremely strict on that. But to me it’s crazy that people are allowed to drive on benzo’s. You could get pulled over and no cop will notice. But you’re putting yourself in an extremely dangerous situation.
So, all I’m saying is: there are alternatives. Cannabis and psychedelics like mushrooms, which have been researched heavily the last 20 years, have been proven to be as efficient, if not more, than prescription drugs. The only reason why it’s illegal is because it’s too easy for a person to grow their own yearly supply (you need about 2 plants to last you a year), which means pharmaceutical companies lose a ton of money. They have a lot of lobbyists.
Luckily for them, they are losing the battle. Cannabis will be legal in the next 5 years, every major party, except for the right-wing science deniers, have seen the light. And then, finally, a lot more people will have access to much better drugs.
